KANSAS CITY, MO - The NM State softball team used a big seventh inning to come-from-behind and defeat UMKC 7-2 on Saturday in game two of the series to capture the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship before collecting the series sweep with an 11-8 win in the series finale. The Aggies won game one 5-4 on Friday. With the second victory, head coach Kathy Rodolph secured her 600th overall win.
The Aggies (35-19, 14-1 WAC) scored seven runs and racked up six RBIs on 10 hits. Emma Adams went 2-for-3, scored one run and had one RBI. Makayla McAdams pitched 3.0 innings and had three strikeouts in 11 batters faced.
UMKC (21-22, 10-5 WAC) scored two runs and had two RBIs on seven hits. Katie Kelley pitched 6.1 innings and had four strikeouts in 29 batters faced.
The Aggies put runners on base in the top of the first inning. Adams was walked. Kelsey Horton reached first on a fielder’s choice as Adams was tagged out on the play. Fiana Finau hit a single to straightaway center field and advanced to second on the throw as Horton moved to third, but both were left stranded to end the first inning.
UMKC took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kelsey Goodwin hit a single to second base and Bri Sims singled down the left field line to put runners on first and second. The runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Alexandra Friloux then hit a single to score Goodwin as the home team took a 1-0 advantage.
NM State put runners on base in the third and fourth innings. Rachel Rodriguez hit a single to right field in the top of the third inning but was left stranded. Corrin Green was walked and Misty Hoohuli entered as a pinch runner in the top of the fourth inning, but she was left stranded.
UMKC extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Morgan Byrn hit a single to right field and stole second. Friloux singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw as Byrn scored to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. UMKC used a single and a walk to load the bases, but the NM State defense used two strikeouts and a fly out to end the inning.
The Aggies scored in the top of the sixth inning. Adams singled to the shortstop and Jasmine Stokes entered as a pinch runner. Horton hit a single up the middle to move Stokes to second base before Finau hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Green then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Stokes.
Fahren Glackin entered as a pinch hitter for Castro and was walked. Castro re-entered to run and stole second base. As she stole second, Horton scored on a fielding error by the third baseman to knot the game a 2-2 after six innings.
NM State took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Nue Sivia entered as a pinch hitter for Bergeson and hit a single to left field before Bergeson re-entered to run. Kennedy Johnson entered to pinch hit for Rodriguez and singled to straightaway center to put runners on first and second. Rodriguez re-entered for Johnson before Adams hit a single to score Bergeson and put runners on second and third.
Horton was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Finau hit a single to right field to score Rodriguez. Green was then walked to score Adams and Castro hit a sacrifice fly to score Horton. B. Nakamura hit a single to left field to score Finau as NM State captured the regular season WAC Championship with a 7-2 victory.
The Aggies scored 11 runs and collected 10 RBIs on 18 hits. Haley Nakamura went 3-for-5, scored two runs and had one RBI. Glackin pitched 4.0 innings and had four strikeouts in 23 batters faced.
UMKC scored eight runs and had seven RBIs on 13 hits. Kendra Leach pitched 1.1 innings and faced 14 batters.
The Aggies scored in the top of the first inning. H. Nakamura hit a single to left field, advanced to second as Adams grounded out and moved to third on a fly out by Horton. H. Nakamura scored as Finau hit a single to right field to give NM State a 1-0 advantage.
UMKC took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Brooke Parker hit a single to left field before Ashlin O’Brien was hit by a pitch. O’Brien stole second as Parker stole third and scored on an Aggie error. Goodwin singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw as O’Brien moved to third. O’Brien scored as Leach hit a single to left field to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
NM State regained the lead in the top of the second inning. B. Nakamura singled up the middle and Castro hit a single to shortstop to put runners on first and second. The runners moved to second and third as Bergeson grounded out. H. Nakamura then hit a single to straightaway center and advanced on the throw as B. Nakamura scored.
Adams singled up the middle to score H. Nakamura and Castro. Horton then hit a single to left field and advanced to second on an error as Adams scored on the play. Sivia hit a double to right field to score Horton and Glackin singled to left field to score Finau. B. Nakamura then hit a single up the middle to score Sivia. Castro singled to right field to load the bases. Bergeson singled to shortstop to score Glackin as the Aggies took a 9-2 lead after two innings.
UMKC scored again in the bottom of the third inning. Kelley doubled to right center and scored as Goodwin hit a double to left field. Goodwin scored as Sims hit a single to cut NM State’s lead to 9-4.
The Aggies extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Glackin singled to left field, Castro reached on an error by the shortstop and Bergeson was walked to load the bases. Adams then hit a single to second base to score Glackin and Castro as NM State took an 11-4 advantage.
UMKC added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the fourth inning, Parker singled to the shortstop, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Goodwin hit a single to left field to score Parker. Goodwin then hit a solo home run over straightaway center in the sixth inning. Sims and Kendra Leach were walked before Byrn hit a single down the right field line to score Sims as the home team cut NM State’s lead to 11-7.
UMKC scored in the bottom of the seventh. Parker hit a bunt single, advanced to second on an Aggie error and moved to third on a ground out. Rachel Pate hit a single to second base to score Parker as NM State won 11-8.
The Aggies take the field again on Wednesday as they take on New Mexico at 5:00 p.m. MT at the Lobo Softball Field.
