BROWNSVILLE, TX - The 2015-16 season ended on Sunday for the NM State women’s tennis team when it fell to UT Rio Grande Valley 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference Championship match held at the Brownsville Tennis Center.

Things started off well for the Aggies (11-10) as its No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams cruised to a 6-2 victory, giving NM State the 1-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Erika Castillo Lopez and Gabrielle Joyce was the first to finish when they dispatched Reegan Greenwood and Tara Donaho. Shortly after, Ashvarya Shrivastav and Rimpeldeep Kaur ousted their counterparts on court No. 2.

Kaur gave New Mexico State an early 2-0 lead when she sent Dominique Esparza packing with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. The win gave Kaur her seventh-straight victory in singles play.

However, that was as far as Aggies got against the Vaqueros. UTRGV (11-10) cut the lead to 2-1 after Linday Harlas dropped her match against Doris Aleksovska 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Castillo Lopez was the next to fall, this time on court No. 4, when Dominique Ibarra got the best of her 6-4, 6-4.

Chloe Jolliff and Natacha Minc went back and forth in the first set of their match and needed a tiebreaker before Minc got the best of Jolliff 7-6 (8-6). With the second set tied at 4-4, Jolliff gave way to Minc and fell 6-4 in the second set.

Like Jolliff, Donaho and Mia Brandt went toe-to-toe in the first set with UTRGV’s Donaho winning the battle 7-6 (7-5). Despite bringing the second set to 4-4, Brandt was unable to force a third set and fell 6-4.

With the win, the Vaqueros earned the WAC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
