Aggie Softball Falls To Bakersfield 2-1 In WAC Tournament, Faces Elimination Game

SEATTLE, WA - Despite outhitting the Roadrunners eight to three, the NM State softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to third-seeded CSU Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at Logan Field.

The Aggies (37-20) scored one run and amassed one RBI on eight hits. Rachel Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, an RBI and a walk. Karysta Donisthope pitched 6.0 innings and had eight strikeouts in 24 batters faced.

CSU Bakersfield (15-32) scored two runs and had no RBIs on three hits. Amber Mills pitched 4.0 innings and allowed six hits in 21 batters faced.

The Aggies put runners on base in the first inning. Haley Nakamura singled to left field. Emma Adams then reached on a fielder’s choice as H. Nakamura was tagged out on the play. Finau was walked to put runners on first and second, but the runners were left stranded.

CSU Bakersfield took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Simmons doubled to left field, Sydney Raeber was hit by a pitch and Selena Gonzalez was walked to load the bases. Chris Hipa then reached on an Aggie error, while Raeber and Simmons scored on the play to give CSU Bakersfield a 2-0 advantage.

NM State put runners in scoring position in the second inning, Rodriguez singled down the left field line and then stole second. Amy Bergeson hit a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third, but both were left stranded.

After Donisthorpe garnered a strikeout for the first out in the bottom of the third inning, Raeber hit a bunt single. Bergeson made a diving catch in foul territory for the second out of the inning before Briana Pontecorvo singled up the middle. Donisthorpe then struck out Hipa to end the inning as the Aggies held CSU Bakersfield to a 2-0 lead.

The Aggies put two runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth inning. Rodriguez singled up the middle and stole second. Rodriguez then stole third as Bergeson was walked. Bergeson stole second to give NM State 103 stolen bases on the season, but both runners were left stranded.

NM State cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Adams doubled down the right field line and advanced to third as Horton singled up the middle. Horton stole second before Finau was walked to load the bases. Rodriguez was then walked to score Adams as the Aggies fell 2-1 to CSU Bakersfield.

The Aggies take the field again at 7:00 p.m. MT as they face the team that loses between Seattle U and Utah Valley.
