LAS VEGAS, NV - In the finale of the UNLV Invitational, New Mexico State (1-2) could not overcome large deficits against UNLV (3-0) as they fell in three sets on Saturday. The Rebels took the match with a 21-25, 17-25, 21-25 decision.

“The frustrating thing about today was the ball control,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “We have been a pretty good ball control team. We struggled passing today, and gave [UNLV] a lot of free swings. However, they are a good veteran team with several seniors at home, which is always hard. I think the tough loss in five sets last night had an impact on us today, hopefully that won’t be the case in the future. I think there is a lot to be excited about too. We attacked the ball pretty well in some spots. I think when the young players start to produce more and the older players learn to lead them more, we will be a good team.”

Western Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Sasha-Lee Thomas was named to the All-Tournament team. In the three matches, Thomas logged 32 kills and a .212 hitting percentage.

Junior Jordan Abalos paced the Aggies with her third-straight double-double in the match, putting up 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Tatyana Battle also was a large contributor as well, turning in 9 kills of her own.

The Aggies came out of the gate red hot as they ran out to a 6-2 lead early in the first set. However, a 6-0 run by UNLV put the Rebels up 11-9. The set was tightly contested with six ties, until UNLV went up to stay 21-17. They would claim the first set 25-21.

NM State started cold in the second frame, with the Rebels going up 6-3 early. The Aggies would battle back and briefly take the lead at 10-9. However, a run of 4-0 by UNLV put NM State in a hole they could not dig out of. The Rebels won the set 25-17.

The third and final set was all UNLV, as they ran out to a 6-3 lead again to start. The Rebels got their largest lead of the match at 17-8. NM State tried to mount a comeback, but it was not enough as UNLV would win the set and match 25-21.

The Aggies are back in action on Sept. 2 as they travel to Troy, Ala. for the Trojan Invitational and face off against Austin Peay, Valparaiso, Southern and host Troy.
