Aggie Soccer Falls At UIC 4-1

CHICAGO, IL - Second half woes continues to hurt the New Mexico State women's soccer team as it dropped a 4-1 decision to UIC Sunday afternoon at Flames Filed.

"I thought we adjusted pretty well in the first half," Aggie head coach Freddy Delgado said. "I was proud of our effort and how we kept fighting in the game. In the second half we started off strong and got the goal, but then we had a mental let down and allowed them to score. As a team, we're still continuing to mature to not let our highs get too high and our lows go too low. We have to do a better job playing at our peak performance no matter the score, time or opponent."

The Aggies and Flames exchanged shots the first 20 minutes of action with Audriana Chavez and Devin Hart providing the fire power for NM State (0-3-0). However, Emily Waur found the back of the net on her third try of the first half thanks to a pair of passes inside the box to give UIC (1-1-2) the 1-0 lead with 24:49 on the clock.

In the 39th minute, Aileen Galicia had three good looks at the cage. Her first shot was blocked by a UIC defender while her third sailed just over the crossbar. The sophomore continued her attack and blasted one at the cage, but UIC's Annie DiCanio was there to make the save.

The Aggies earned their first corner kick of the match with 43:23 on the clock, but couldn't convert as they headed into the break trailing UIC 1-0.

Minutes into the second half, UIC was called for back-to-back fouls with the second coming inside the box which set up the penalty-kick opportunity for Holly Abdelkader. With the Aggies trailing UIC 1-0, Abdelkader sent a laser into the back of the net to equalize the game with 48:55 on the clock. Unfortunately, a miscue by the Aggies after the reset allowed UIC to regain the 2-1 lead just 10 seconds later on a long pass down the right side of the field.

The Flames extended their lead to 3-1 at the 70:09 mark on a set piece and tacked on an insurance goal just over a minute later to go ahead 4-1.

New Mexico State had a set piece opportunity with 84:05 on the clock, but Gabriel Campbell's shot off the corner kick was just left of the cage. Galicia then had a shot on goal opportunity in the final minute, but went wide left as time expired to give UIC the 4-1 victory.

The Aggies now return home to the Soccer Athletic Complex for their home-opener against Texas State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest with Wyoming on Sunday, Sept. 4.The NM State Athletic Department will be hosting its Under Armour uniform unveiling for football, volleyball and soccer on Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
