LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Junior Jordan Abalos led the New Mexico State volleyball team with a career-high 19 kills as the Aggies fell 21-25, 25-19, 16-25, 20-25 to Arizona in the final contest of the Borderland Invitational at the Pan American Center.

“The first set got away from us,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “We had 17 kills to their 13, and we made a couple of ball handling errors late that cost us. If we could have gotten that win, we could have gone up 2-0 after the break and I would have liked our chances. We looked great in the second set, probably as good as we have looked all year. In the third set we came out and got down early, and were emotionless. I tried to fie us up and get us a rally, but our leaders need to do that not me. All in all, we are consistently inconsistent with some things, with our youth. We will get better.”

In addition to a personal-best 19 kills, Abalos led the squad with 13 digs to earn her seventh double-double of the season. Junior Kassandra Tohm and sophomore Tatyana Battle chipped in double digit kills with 13 and 11, respectively.

In the first set, the Aggies came out strong as they opened with an early 3-1 lead. Arizona drew even at 4-4 and took a brief lead at 5-4, but NM State was able to regain the advantage at 8-7. The Wildcats took over at 9-8, and pushed their lead to 12-9. NM State fought back and tied the set at 16-16, but Arizona regained extended the lead to 18-17. They would eventually win the set 25-21.

The Wildcats looked to roll early in the second set, as they opened with a 3-1 lead of their own. However, the Aggies fought back and took the lead at 5-4. They pushed the lead to 10-8. Arizona cut the lead to 11-10. NM State took their largest lead of the match at 20-14. The Aggies eventually took the set 25-19.

The third set was all Wildcats as they opened on a 6-0 run. NM State would attempt to make it close by cutting the lead to 10-8. However, the Aggies had no answers for Arizona’s point runs, with the Wildcats pushing the lead to 20-13. They took the set 25-16.

The fourth and final set was more of the same, as Arizona opened on a 6-1 run. The Aggie got within two points at 12-10, but the Wildcats pushed the lead out to 17-13. Arizona would win the match 25-20.

NM State is back in action next weekend as they travel to Providence, R.I. for the Brown University Tournament.
