PHOENIX, AZ - New Mexico State (13-4, 4-0 WAC) came away with a 26-24, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of Grand Canyon (4-11, 0-3 WAC) to close out their first Western Athletic Conference road trip of the season on Saturday.

“You have to give GCU a lot of credit for competing well,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “I thought we got outplayed in some areas. Offensively, we finally stopped being so error-prone, and our blocking got better as the match went on. I think that was the difference in the match. We did what we were supposed to do. I’d like to see us continue to get better, not make so many errors. When we stop giving the other team points, we will be a really good volleyball team.”

Three Aggies finished with double-digit kills in the match. Junior Jordan Abalos paced the squad with 15 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Sophomore Tatyana Battle put up 12 kills, and junior Sasha-Lee Thomas logged 10 kills and three blocks.

The match started with both teams trading points the majority of the first set. The frame featured
16 ties and seven lead changes. The Aggies managed to maintain the momentum and claim the set 26-24.

The Aggies came alive in the second set as they opened on a 6-3 lead. The Lopes rallied to make the set close with the teams staying with in within one point for a large portion of the set. NM State finally broke away, as they went on a 3-0 run and took an 18-15 lead. They eventually took the set 25-20.

NM State continued their momentum as they opened the third set with a 6-2 run. They pushed their lead to 10-7, and then 14-10. GCU attempted a comeback as they pulled within one at 17-16. The Aggies pulled away at 20-16 and captured the set and match with a 25-21 decision.

The Aggies are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 as they open a four-game homestand with the first match of the Battle of I-10 rivalry series with UTEP.
