LAS CRUCES, N.M. - With 88:19 left in regulation, Dominique Rivera booted the corner kick nearside for NM State as it sailed over every single player except freshman Tuti Tirado, who easily headed in the game-winner Friday afternoon. The goal lifted the Aggies past the Cougars, 2-1, minutes after the Chicago State knocked in the equalizer.

Oddly enough, soon after the match ended, Tirado and Rivera were being featured in the second episode of Aggie Profiles. A monthly student-athlete centric television show that gives fans an inside look and get to know the student-athletes here at New Mexico State beyond their sports.

“We played a very tough, stingy Chicago State team today,” head coach Freddy Delgado said. “They were very difficult to break down. I’m proud of how we responded though. We showed determination, composure and resilience. The effort and win today proves how far we have come this season. Sometimes you don’t have your best game, and when you can still get the win, it proves what we are capable of doing”

The first half was a lot of back-and-forth around the midfield while NM State (4-9-0, 1-0-0 WAC) held possession for most of the half. Despite outshooting the Cougars (1-10-0, 0-1-0 WAC) 14-4, the Aggies missed some opportunities as both teams went into the locker room with the match scoreless.

The second half was pretty similar to that of the first half with New Mexico State controlling the possession most of the game until the last 25 minutes.

In the 72nd minute, Gabby Campbell connected with Aileen Galicia – who was running up the middle – to give NM State the 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short-lived as Chicago State’s Makenzi Marier knocked in the equalizer with 80:51 on the clock.

Things got tense after the game was knotted up at 1-1 with a pair of Chicago State players earning yellow cards within a minute of each other. The second of the two yellow cards led to the corner kick that eventually became the game-winner.

Audra Wisehart for Chicago State played a great match despite being a last minute switch to start in goal. She finished with 13 saves while freshman Raeann Garcia picked up her first-career victory today after coming in at halftime for the Aggies.

New Mexico State now hits the road for a single match in Kansas City this Sunday, Oct. 9, at Noon (MT) on the WAC Digital Network match against UMKC.
