BAKERSFIELD, CA - The NM State women’s soccer team heads home for its final match of the regular-season after wrapping up its road trip on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to CSU Bakersfield at the Main Soccer Field.

The ‘Runners came after the NM State (4-12-2, 1-3-2 WAC) defense out of the gates, firing four shots at the goal before Sophie Freeman was able to find the back of the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Senior Gabby Campbell looked to equalize the match at the 5:05 mark when she put her laces on ball towards the goal, but CSUB’s (8-9-1, 4-2-0 WAC) Jen Padilla was able to get a hand on it to keep the Aggies down 1-0.

The next seven minutes of play got chippy and physical as the official handed out four caution cards between the two teams. After the string of cautions, Freeman put CSU Bakersfield up 2-0 at the 11:59 mark when she headed in a ball sent in by Maja Green. The ‘Runners then tacked on another goal in the 24th minute on a free kick.

Audriana Chavez cut the CSUB lead to 3-1 at the 33:59 mark when she finished a ball just left of the CSUB keeper on a pass beautifully sent in by Aileen Galicia. The ‘Runners countered after the reset and sent a howling shot on goal, but Raeann Garcia was there to make the save. Several CSUB shots later, Galicia again found Chavez in the box – this time on a pass that just got by the CSUB keeper that Chavez tapped in with ease as the first half came to an end.

CSU Bakersfield’s constant attack on the Aggie backline yielded two more goals in the second half, coming in the 56th minute and 60th minute – respectively. As hard as the Aggies fought, they weren’t able to get on their attacking third as much as they needed and were held to just two shots in the second half – both coming in the final 10 minutes of play in the 5-2 loss.

New Mexico State now heads home for the final regular-season match of the year as it entertains UT Rio Grande Valley at 3 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Aggie soccer program will also honor its three seniors, Daniela Barraza, Gabby Campbell and Stephanie Petre after the match.
