NMSU Softball Announces 2017 Signing Class

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State head softball coach Kathy Rodolph once again reloads her roster with a staunch signing class for the 2017-18 season. This year’s signing class features two pitchers, two infielders and a catcher. Of the five committed to New Mexico State, four players hail from California while one comes by way of Arizona.

“We are very excited about our 2017 signing class. It's a class that has speed, pitching and defense,” Rodolph said. They have great character with the athletic potential to help us immediately.”

San Pedro, Calif. | Port of Los Angeles HS
Set CIF-Los Angeles City Section single-season record with 408 strikeouts in 197 innings pitched as a junior…also named CIF-Los Angles City Section Co-Pitcher of the Year, Daily Breeze South bay All-Area first-teamer, San Pedro News Pilot prep softball player of the year and Coliseum League Player & Pitcher of the Year…named to Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass First Team…named to All-Crosstown League first-team and All-Coliseum League first-teamer as a freshman and sophomore…has led Port of Los Angeles High School to three-straight league titles and a whopping 89-18 record…posted a 26-4 record in the circle as a junior with a 0.43 earned runs average with an eye-popping 20 shutouts, 5 no-hitters and two perfect games…batted .521 at the plate with an .840 slugging-percentage…went 12-2 during her sophomore campaign with a 2.60 ERA to go with four shutouts and one no-hitter while boasting a .430 batting average and .600 slugging-percentage...had a success freshman year, tossing two shutouts with a 2.55 ERA while hitting .337 from the plate with a .544 slugging-percentage.

Mikayla Bongi
Manteca, Calif. | East Union HS
Guided East Union High School to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championship as a sophomore…helped the Lancers capture three-straight Valley Oak League titles…took ESHS to the quarterfinals of the section championships during her junior campaign…was the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III runner-up her freshman year with East Union…tossed a total of 181.1 innings of work heading into her senior season with a miniscule 1.04 ERA and 215 punch outs with opposing batters just hitting .214 against her…named to All-VOL team as well as the all-area team during her sophomore campaign…earned Valley Oak League Pitcher of the Year honors after going undefeated in season at 12-0 while fanning 131 batters with a miniscule 0.56 ERA.

Quotable: “Mikayla is a left handed pitcher who has a lot of potential. She brings versatility to an already deep and talented pitching staff. We are happy to call her an Aggie.”

Anne “Buddy” Vargas
Tucson, Ariz. | Empire HS
Batted .471 as a junior for Empire High School with 49 hits, 19 RBI and scored 33 runs…guided EHS to a 21-9 overall mark in 2016 and second-place finish in section play…led the Ravens to the second round of the Arizona Interscholastic Association…Vargas recently joined the Empire HS softball team as last season after spending her freshman and sophomore season playing with her travel ball team, the Arizona Thundercats.

Quotable: “Buddy is a slick fielding middle infielder who has a big upside. Her speed and defense will be big assets for us for years to come.”

Sarai Mejia
Temecula, Calif. | Chaparral HS
Earned All-Southwestern League Second-Team honors after batting .400 in her junior campaign with an .829 OPS, 22 runs, six RBI and 11 stolen bases…also earned offensive player of the year as a junior…named co-offensive player of the year after hitting .390 at the plate as a sophomore with 16 hits, nine runs and six RBI…recently helped her travel team, So Cal Athletics, to the 2016 Colorado Fireworks 16U Super 48 this past July.

Quotable: “Sarai adds more speed to our lineup. Her character and softball acumen are equally outstanding. She is a great teammate and will be a great addition to our Aggie softball family.”

Kennedi Sorenson
Valencia, Calif. | West Ranch HS
Guided West Ranch High School to three-consecutive CIF-Southern Section playoff appearances – including a runner-up finish in 2014 as a freshman…led the Wildcats to back-to-back Foothill League titles…wrapped up her junior campaign with a .311 batting average with 15 runs batted in…twin sister, Kalei, signed to play with St. John’s.

Quotable: “Kennedi has a ton of experience in big situations behind the dish. She has great passion for the game and loves to catch. These qualities will certainly help our team.”

Rodolph and the Aggies get to open the 2017 softball season at home, beginning with a three-game series against UTSA (Feb. 11-12) followed by the Troy Cox Classic, Feb. 16-20.
