NMSU Women's Basketball Falls To Santa Clara 60-46 In Play4Kay Finale

LAS VEGAS, NV - New Mexico State women’s basketball played their final game of the Play4Kay Shootout on Wednesday afternoon against the Santa Clara Broncos. A low-scoring contest featured defensive play which kept the Aggies out of a rhythm as they lost the contest, 60-46.

After the Aggies lost the opening tip of the game, they quickly went down 7-0 and were climbing out of a hole for the rest of the contest. NM State struggled down low as the first quarter saw the team get outscored in the paint (10-2). The opponent’s defense also came out quick and forced six turnovers in the opening quarter, off which they scored 11 points. After falling behind 14-4, NM State continued to struggle shooting as they went 27.3 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished down 16-7.

The second quarter saw the team come out and improve upon their earlier play as they shot 47.1 percent from the field and only turned the basketball over once which helped keep the score close. The Aggies bench fought hard when they got minutes and outscored the opponent’s in the first half (9-0).

Unfortunately, the improved play was seen from both benches and NM State still trailed 38-27 at the end of 20 minutes of play. Heading to the locker room, the team was led by Moriah Mack who had seven points, while Brooke Salas and Jeneva Toilolo each totaled six points with three rebounds.

NM State came out in the third quarter and looked to close in on Santa Clara’s lead. The uphill battle was tough to fight for the team as they had their worst shooting quarter of the game in the third, only hitting three of their 12 field goal attempts. After the Broncos went up 47-29, the Aggies looked to respond as they went on a 9-3 run which kept them close as the quarter closed out at 50-38.

As the team came out in the fourth quarter, the opposition looked to end the run the Aggies had built by keeping the score low over the final 10 minutes. The slower tempo saw the two teams combine for the lowest scoring quarter (18 points) as the Aggies fell to Santa Clara, 60-46.

Team play was led by Brooke Salas who put up 12 points with four rebounds and four assists. Following behind the sophomore was Moriah Mack and Jeneva Toilolo who each scored 10 points.

The loss to the Broncos puts New Mexico State at 7-6 on the year. After the holiday break, the team will return to the Pan American Center to host Western New Mexico on Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. This will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Aggies.
