NMSU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Yale

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team went 2-0 on Saturday as the Aggies defeated Yale 16-5 and 7-3 in doubleheader action. The wins moved NM State to 8-5 on the year while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 to start the season.

Game 1: How it happened

NM State got off to a rough start as Yale broke out to an early 1-0 lead. Kyle Bradish started on the mound for the Aggies. He went to work in the first and was able to get out of the inning, only allowing the one run.

The Bulldogs lead didn't last long as the Aggies were able to capitalize in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second, Austin Botello drove in the tying run with a single up the middle. Dan Hetzel followed with a double to give the Aggies the 3-1 lead. LJ Hatch hit a double of his own to score another run for New Mexico State. Brent Sakurai then drove in the last run of the inning to give the Aggies the 5-1 lead after the first.

In the second, Marcus Still drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Botello RBI hit.

The Aggies kept scoring as they put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cooper Williams drove in two with a single to center field while Jason Bush hit a two-run homer, his first homer of the season, to give NM State the 10-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Yale cut into the New Mexico State lead as the Bulldogs scored two runs in the inning.

The Aggies teed off on the Bulldogs once more in the sixth as they batted through the order and added four runs on two hits to lead Yale 14-3.

New Mexico State then added two more runs in the seventh while Yale scored two in the top of the ninth. However, it wasn't enough for the Bulldogs as NM State won 16-5.

Bradish earns his second win of the season and pitched 7.0 innings of work while allowing just three runs to go with five punch outs.

Game 2: How it happened

The Aggies picked up where they left off to start the second game of the doubleheader. In the first, Marcus Still reached on a single up the middle to lead things off. Joey Ortiz followed with a single of his own to center field and put runners on first and second. Botello drove in the first run of the game on a sac-fly and gave New Mexico State the early 1-0 lead.

NM State scored again in the fifth with two runners on when Botello belted a double to drive in the runners and give the Aggies the 3-0 lead.

However, Yale rallied in the sixth when Griffin Dey hit a three-run homer to tie the game.

NM State broke away in the bottom of the seventh. Still started the inning with a single followed by a Botello double to put runners on second and third. Dan Hetzel drove in Still on a single to left field for the go-ahead run. Mason Fishback capped off the inning with a two RBI single to give New Mexico State the 6-3 lead.

The Aggies tacked on an insurance run the eighth and defeated the Bulldogs 7-3. Andy Frakes earns his first win this season with the Aggie victory.

NM State closes out the four-game series against Yale on Sunday, March 5, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
