LAS VEGAS, NV - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team squared off against the Seattle U Redhawks in the team’s third-consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship appearance at the Orleans Arena on Saturday. The Aggies made history as they won their third straight tournament championship with a 63-48 win over the Redhawks.

After the historic night, head coach Mark Trakh commented on the championship saying, “We just defeated a really good team that had an incredible season. Credit to their head coach Suzy Barcomb and the team on a great year. With this win our team made history and I’m so proud of these girls because they represent the New Mexico State University so well on and off the floor.”

After the game opened with Brianna Freeman winning the tip for the Aggies, the team grabbed an early lead and did not look back. While the first quarter saw the team’s trade early baskets, the Aggies stifling defense got too the opponent early and often forcing four quick turnovers in the opening quarter. The offense played just as well as six Aggies contributed to the scoring as the team led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, NM State put their foot on the gas as they opened with a15-2 run. The solid play saw the Aggies hold the Redhawks scoreless in over six minutes of play. Led by Moriah Mack with 11 points and Tamera William adding eight with seven rebounds, the team ended the first half up 33-18.

The Aggies made their presence felt down low as they outscored Seattle U in the paint (14-8) and corralled more rebounds (24-13) in the first 20 minutes.

As the second half opened, the Redhawks looked to change the momentum as the Aggies allowed the opponent to go on a 6-0 run before coach Trakh called a timeout just 1:21 into the third quarter. The call worked as NM State responded with a 10-1 run of their own to extend the lead. Although the Redhawks outscored the Aggies in the third (19-15), the team still held the lead, 48-37, through three quarters.

The final quarter saw NM State add to their lead with an 11-0 run, forcing Seattle UI to call a timeout with 5:55 remaining in the hopes of slowing the Aggies down. While the call allowed the opponent to outscore the Aggies 11-4 to close out, NM State’s lead was too much as they walked away with a 63-48 victory.

The win saw three Aggies score in double digits, led by Tamera William with 19 points, followed by Moriah Mack who had 18 and Zaire Williams added 11. On the defensive end, NM State finished with 12 steals and three blocks while only allowing Seattle U to score 48 points, the fifth lowest total allowed this season by the team.

After the game, Moriah Mack and Tamera William were named to the WAC All-Tournament Team and Mack also earned tournament Most Valuable Player after totaling 39 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four blocks in two games.

This WAC Tournament Championship is now the third-consecutive for the Aggies as the three-peat has only been accomplished one other time in WAC history (Louisiana Tech, 2002-2004).

With the victory the Aggies moves to 24-6 on the season as they now wait to find out their opponent in the NCAA Tournament with the NCAA Selection Show set for Monday, March 13 at 5 p.m. MT.
