NMSU Softball Run Rules Omaha 14-6 In Six Innings

OMAHA, NE - New Mexico State softball defeated Omaha 14-6 in six innings on Tuesday. The Aggies hit three home runs in the game, two by Kaitlyn Rubio and one by Nikki Butler.

How it happened

The Aggies got off to a hot start in the first. Singles by Rachel Rodriguez and Caity Szczesny started the inning as Kelsey Horton came to the plate. The sophomore drove Rodriguez home to give NM State the 1-0 advantage. Fahren Glackin followed with single of her own to score the second run of the inning. Kaitlyn Rubio brought home the third run of the inning to give the Aggies the early 3-0 lead.

Omaha put up a run in the bottom of the second to cut into New Mexico State's lead, but the Aggies followed by putting up two runs in the third. With runners on second and third, Glackin hit a single to drive in two and give New Mexico State the 5-1 lead.

UNO followed with two runs to cut into the NM State lead once more.

Nikki Butler opened the game back up for the Aggies in the fourth. The freshman hit her second homer of the season to give the Aggies the 6-3 advantage in the fourth.

Omaha didn't go away easily for the Aggies as the Mavericks matched the NM State run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning.

In the fifth inning, Rubio hit a solo home run. However, UNO hit a solo home run to score once more. Still, NM State maintained the 7-5 advantage.

The Aggies pulled ahead in the sixth as they put up seven runs to close the game. With runners on first and second. Haley Nakamura hit a single to score Jeanelle Medina from second.

After Szczesny singled to load the bases, Horton hit a double to right center field to score two more runs for NM State. Glackin followed with a two run double of her own to give NM State the 12-5 lead.

Rubio capped off the innings with a two-run homer to give New Mexico State the nine run advantage.

UNO scored a run in the bottom of the innings but the Aggies held on for the 14-6 win.

Kayla Green earns her sixth win of the season as Samaria Diaz earned her first save. New Mexico State moves to 10-14 as Omaha falls to 9-19.

The Aggies travel to Tempe, Arizona, to take on Arizona State in doubleheader action on Wednesday, March 22. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
