NMSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With UTEP

EL PASO, TX - New Mexico State softball defeated I-10 rival UTEP in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday. The Aggies defeated the Miners 8-4 and 13-4 in doubleheader action.

NM State moves to 12-16 this season while UTEP falls to 8-23.

Game One

The Aggies got off to a hot start, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Haley Nakamura reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning. Two-straight walks loaded the bases as Nikki Butler came to the plate. Butler singled to score the first run of the game. A walk to Kennedy Johnson with the bases loaded scored the second run of the inning to give NM State the 2-0 advantage.

NM State added to its lead with a run in the second. With Amy Bergeson on second, Nakamura dropped a bunt to advance the runner. An error by UTEP on the play brought Bergeson home for the 3-0 lead.

New Mexico State faced trouble in the bottom of the fourth. After scoring a run and loading the bases with two outs, runner’s interference was called on the Miners to end the inning.

The Aggies put up two runs in the fifth to extend their lead over the Miners. With Kelsey Horton on first, Butler hit a booming double to put runners on second and third. An error on the UTEP second baseman scored the first run of the inning for NM State. Victoria Castro singled to score Butler to give the Aggies the 5-1 advantage.

UTEP rallied in the bottom of the sixth as the Miners scored three to come within one of NM State.

The bats came to life once more for NM State in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second and two outs, Amy Bergeson hit a triple to left field, scoring the runners. An error by UTEP allowed the junior to score and gave New Mexico State the 8-4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Kayla Green was able to take down the Miners to close out the game, giving NM State the 8-4 victory.

Game Two

The Aggies fell behind early as UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Miner lead did not last as New Mexico State put up nine runs in the top of the second. It was the most runs scored by the Aggies in an inning this season.

After scoring a run on a bases loaded walk, Rachel Rodriguez and Haley Nakamura hit back-to-back singles to score three runs to give the Aggies the 4-1 lead.

Szczesny followed with a double to score the runner from second to give the Aggies the 5-1 advantage. New Mexico State scored two more runs before Nikki Butler hit her third home run of the season. Butler hit her two-run homer to right field, capping of the nine-run inning.

The Miners came back in the bottom of the inning with a run to cut into the Aggie lead.

NM State did not back down as Victoria Castro hit a solo home run in the top of the third to give the New Mexico State the 10-2 advantage.

The Aggies followed the third inning by scoring three runs in the fourth. Butler started the scoring run by hitting her second two-run homer of the game. The final run of the inning came from the bat of Rodriguez. With a runner on second, Rodriguez doubled to left field to score the runner for the 13-2 advantage.

UTEP scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough as the Aggies defeated the Miners 13-4 in five innings.

Kayla Green pitched 6.2 innings to open the doubleheader. She moves to 7-9 this season. Diaz struck out four batters in the five inning win. She moves to 5-7 this season.

The Aggies return home to open conference play on Friday, March 31. NM State hosts Utah Valley in a three game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.-
