NMSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Series With UMKC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State cruised past UMKC to complete the sweep of the Roos on Saturday. The Aggies run-ruled UMKC in both their 8-0 and 11-3 victories.

Game One

Kelsey Horton and Fahren Glackin drew back-to-back walks to start the first inning for New Mexico State. With runners on first and second, Nikki Butler reached on an error by UMKC and Horton came home on the play to give NM State the early 1-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings for both teams, the Aggies bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth. After Haley Nakamura walked, Victoria Castro hit a two-run home run for her third homer of the season. Alexis Maynez kept the inning going by reaching on a single through the right side. Caity Szczesny followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Rachel Rodriguez. After a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position, Rodriguez singled up the middle, scoring another run. Glackin was hit by a pitch, which to load the bases for Butler. Butler worked a 3-2 count and drew a walk to score the fifth run of the inning.

In the fifth inning, Castro hit a leadoff single up the middle. Maynez followed Castro with the second two-run homer of the game as she sent a long ball over the left field fence. The home run ended the game in the fifth inning as the New Mexico State shutout UMKC, 8-0.

Game Two

The Aggies kept their momentum going, as Rachel Rodriguez singled to start the game. After Haley Nakamura reached on a fielder's choice, Kelsey Horton hit her eighth home run of the season, giving NM State an early 2-0 advantage

Nikki Butler followed Horton with the second single of the inning. Fahren Glackin drew a four-pitch walk to bring Victoria Castro to the plate. Castro hit her second home run of the day, giving NM State a 5-0 advantage. Alexis Maynez and Destiny Blueford hit back-to-back triples for the Aggies to score the sixth run. Blueford came home on a passed ball to score the seventh and final run of the inning.

The Aggies' bats stayed hot in the second as Horton got it started with a single up the middle. Butler reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. Glackin scored Horton from third on a ground out, giving NM State an 8-0 advantage. Castro reached on a single through the left side and followed by stealing second to put runners on second and third with two outs in the innings. Kennedy Johnson scored both runners as she hit a double to right field, giving the Aggies a 10-0 lead.

NM State hit trouble in the third as Abby Warkentine hit a one-out triple to right field. Faith Willis singled through the right side to score the Roos first run of the day.

UMKC kept the rally going in the fourth as Kelsey Goodwin singled and reached second on an error to start the inning. Lia Lombardini walked and Alex Larson singled to center field to load the bases. Kendra Leach singled to centerfield, scoring two for the Roos.

Those were the last runs scored by UMKC as New Mexico State ended the game in the fifth inning. Maynez got the inning started for the Aggies with a double to right center field. After Amy Bergeson came in to pinch run for Maynez, Brandy Hernandez hit an infield single to put runners on the corners. With Merina Ili at the plate, Hernandez stole second. An error on the throw allowed Bergeson to score from third and gave New Mexico State the 11-3 victory.

With the sweep NM State moves to 20-17 overall and 8-1 in conference play while UMKC falls to 13-30 and 4-5. Kayla Green recorded her tenth win of the season in the shutout. She pitched a complete game and allowed only two hits. Samaria Diaz moved to 10-7 with a win in the series finale. The freshman pitcher gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out five.

New Mexico State remains at home as the Aggies take on No. 1 Arizona on Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.(MT).
