ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico State softball defeated I-25 rival New Mexico on Tuesday. The Aggies defeated the Lobos 7-6 to complete the season sweep of their in-state rivals. It was also head coach Kathy Rodolph's 500th win at the NCAA level.

How it happened

NM State (24-22) struck first in the top of the third when Destiny Blueford started the inning with a bunt single. Jeanelle Medina followed with a single of her own, putting runners on first and second with no outs in the inning. After Rachel Rodriguez advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, Blueford scored when Caity Szczesny reached on a fielder's choice. A sacrifice fly by Kelsey Horton brought Medina home, giving the Aggies the 2-0 lead.

UNM (20-24) came back in the bottom on the inning with back-to-back doubles by D'andra DeFlora and Michala Erickson, scoring New Mexico's first run of the game. After Cheyenne Smith reached on a single and Jasmine Casados walked, Chelsea Johnson hit a home run over the center field fence, tilting the game in the Lobos favor.

After a scoreless inning for both teams, Blueford and Medina started another scoring rally by hitting back-to-back singles in the fifth. Rodriguez walked to load the bases and Szczesny singled to put the Aggies within a run of UNM. Horton followed by scoring two on a fielder's choice, which gave NM State a 5-4 lead. After Nikki Butler singled and Kaitlyn Rubio walked, Victoria Castro hit a booming double to right field, scoring a run for New Mexico State. Fahren Glackin singled through the left side, scoring the final run of the inning, which gave the Aggies the 7-4 advantage.

The Lobos fought back one last time in the seventh when Lauren Wilmert started the inning with a single through the left side. Erickson hit a two-run homer to bring the Lobos within a score of NM State. Glackin came in to relieve Samaria Diaz in the circle and earned her first save of the season as the Aggies held on to defeat the New Mexico 7-6.

New Mexico State returns home for the regular season finale on Thursday. The Aggies host Florida Atlantic in a single game on May 4 with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. (MT).
