TUCSON, AZ - New Mexico State volleyball opened the Wildcat Classic with a loss to Illinois State on Friday. The Aggies fell in straight sets 19-25, 22-25, 19-25.

"We can't make this many unforced errors and expect to beat a good team," head coach Mike Jordan said. "We played poorly and lost almost every long rally. Give credit to Illinois State, they played well defensively."

How It Happened

New Mexico State (6-4) went back-and-forth with Illinois State (5-6) to start the match but the Redbirds pulled away, taking a 14-9 lead. NM State continued to go point-for-point with Illinois State but trailed late in the set. Ultimately, the Aggies were unable to make a comeback and fell in the first set 25-19

The momentum was not on NM State's side and the Aggies fell behind 8-2 early in the second set. New Mexico State scored three-straight to cut the lead in half but continued to trail Illinois State. NM State went on another scoring run to take a 17-14 lead, but the Redbirds went on a run of their own and took back the lead. After maintaining a 22-20 advantage over Illinois State, NM State gave up five-straight to the Redbirds, closing out the 25-22 loss.

Despite starting the third set with a 2-0 advantage, New Mexico State trailed 8-2 after giving up eight-straight points to the Redbirds. The Aggies tried to chip away at the Illinois State lead and even went on a scoring run late in the set. However, it was not enough to overcome the deficit and NM State fell in the third set 25-19.
