NMSU Volleyball Falls In Five Sets At Arizona

TUCSON, AZ - New Mexico State volleyball fell to Arizona in five sets at the Wildcat Classic on Friday night. The Aggies were defeated 20-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 11-15 for their second-straight loss.

"We battled and played well in spurts. Our two teams are very similar, we're physical but make too many errors," head coach Mike Jordan said. "It was back-and-forth and I loved our effort until the very end."

How It Happened

New Mexico State (6-5) battled with the Wildcats (6-2) for each point early on in the first set but a pair of scoring runs by the UA put the Aggies behind 16-10. NM State pulled within three of Arizona but it was not enough to power New Mexico State ahead of the Wildcats. Six service errors by the NM State haunted the Aggies as the team fell 25-20.

In the second set, NM State kept it close with the Wildcats until the Aggies pulled ahead by three, causing Arizona to take a timeout. New Mexico State continued to lead late in the set but UA tied the set 19-19. NM State earned a two-point advantage and it was enough to help the Aggies win the second set 25-22.

NM State carried its momentum into the third set and took an early three-point lead over the Wildcats but UA quickly tied the match 5-5. The Aggies battle back-and-forth with Arizona until UA went on a scoring run to take an 18-12 lead. The advantage continued to grow for the Wildcats and NM State was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 25-16.

The Aggies took an early four-point lead over UA to start the fourth set. NM State continued to dominate, holding a 16-9 advantage over the Wildcats. Arizona chipped away at the Aggies lead and came within two points, but New Mexico State surged ahead to force a fifth set.

The teams battled for each point in the fifth set and after being tied 4-4, NM State pulled ahead with a four-point scoring run. The Aggies continued to fight but the Wildcats surged back and took a 13-11 lead late in the set. NM State was unable to score again and fell 15-11.

By the Numbers

New Mexico State hit .173 in the match recording 61 kills. NM State also tallied 81 digs and was led by Ariadnne Sierra who posted 28 digs . Jordan Abalos and Briana Ainsworth recorded double-doubles in the match. Abalos racked up 15 kills and 18 digs while Ainsworth led the team with 30 assists and accompanied with 11 digs.

The Aggies take on William & Mary in their final game at the Wildcat Classic. First serve from the match on Saturday, Sept. 16, is set for 10:30 a.m. (MT).
