DENVER, CO - Abel Ketema received the Western Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week award for the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1, the league announced on Tuesday. This is Ketema's first weekly honor this season and the first of his career at New Mexico State.

"Abel is someone still learning how to push himself in cross country. He is slowly getting out of his middle-distance mindset and is seeing how great he can be in the 8k and 10k races," assistant cross country coach Joseph Rath said. "I'm very happy to see he is getting recognition as he is one of the nicest, hard-working student athletes I have had the chance to coach!"

Ketema was the top finisher for the NM State men's team at the Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge, clocking in at 24.41.8. In just his third race with the Aggies and his first 8k of the season, the junior placed 12th out of 226 runners to lead the NM State to a third-place team finish among Division I teams. He also posted an average mile time of 4:58.1 during the race.

New Mexico State cross country is back in action on Oct. 14 when the Aggies travel to Sunnyvale, Calif., to compete at the Santa Clara Bronco Invite.
