LONG BEACH, CA - New Mexico State women's basketball was defeated by Northeastern in a close game at the Walter Pyramid on Wednesday. The Aggies fell to the Huskies 65-64 to open the Long Beach Classic.

“It was a great basketball game. We just didn’t get that roll that we needed at the end,” head coach Brooke Atkinson said. “We need to work on not having those offensive lulls like we did in the second quarter. We competed and we gave ourselves a chance and this is a great learning experience for us moving forward.”

How It Happened
NM State (4-7) scored first and back-to-back three-point baskets by Monique Mills gave the Aggies the early 6-3 lead over the NU (5-5). New Mexico State went back-and-forth early in the contest but at the media timeout, the Aggies trailed 17-15. Out of the timeout, NM State scored on two-straight possession with Tonishia Childress and Dominique Mills picking up their first points of the game to give the Aggies a two-point lead. The Huskies countered with a basket following the run and at the end of the first quarter, the contest was tied 19-19.

After a layup by Gia Pack tied the game 21-21 in the second quarter, New Mexico State hit trouble as the team gave up a 7-0 run to NU. A jumper by Brooke Salas snapped the Aggies’ offensive lull but the pair of baskets were the only buckets the team scored from the field in the quarter and the team went to the locker room trailing 30-25.

At halftime, Salas led all NM State players with nine points followed by M. Mills who posted six. Pack led the team with five rebounds while Jeneva Toilolo tallied four in the first two quarters.

Coming out of the half, Zaire Williams kick-started the New Mexico State offense and gave the Aggies a 31-30 advantage after hitting two-straight shots from beyond the arc. M. Mills followed by scoring a pair of threes to give NM State a 44-38 lead at the media timeout. A four-point run by the Huskies brought NU within two, but a jumper by Pack snapped the NU rally. After a three-point shot gave Northeastern a one-point advantage, Salas made a jumper from the paint with seconds remaining on the clock to put the Aggie squad ahead 50-49 with a quarter remaining.

After pulling ahead 52-49, Northeastern went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. A three by M. Mills and a jumper by Pack tied the game and reclaimed the Aggies’ two-point advantage late in the contest. A basket by NU with 1:03 remaining put the Aggies down by a point but a layup by Salas with 48 seconds remaining put the NM State ahead once more. The Huskies did not go away and with 11 seconds remaining, Northeastern hit a three to give the team a one-point lead over the Aggies. Salas took a shot as time expired but it would not fall and New Mexico State dropped the 65-64 contest in the team’s first game at the Long Beach Classic.

By the Numbers
M. Mills led all players with 18 points in the contest. Salas posted 17 points and three rebounds while Pack tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. The Aggie squad led 19-6 in points off turnovers but the Huskies held a 47-26 advantage on rebounds.
