DENVER, CO - New Mexico State men’s tennis junior Enrique Asmar was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week in singles late Tuesday morning.

This is his first weekly honor of the season and second of his career. It is also the first weekly honor for NM State since opening the dual season last week.

Asmar opened the dual season going undefeated in both singles and doubles – teaming up with freshman Louis Menard at the No. 3 doubles slot.

The 6-1 righty first took care of business against San Francisco’s Paul Giraud 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles before playing the next two matches at the No. 4 singles position. In his second match, Asmar bested Saint Mary’s Matis Bot 6-4, 6-4 before returning home to Las Cruces for the 6-1, 6-1 win this past Sunday.

Asmar is now 14-4 overall on the year in singles and 3-0 in dual play. His 14 victories leads all Aggie players and is one of four players to have double-digit wins.

New Mexico State hits the road this weekend and compete in Las Vegas this Friday, Feb. 2, and Saturday, Feb. 3. The Aggies first take on Weber State before facing off against LMU on Friday before squaring off against UNLV and UC Riverside. Matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. (MT) and 3 p.m., respectively.
