NMSU Women's Basketball Falls At Bakersfield 62-52

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team took on CSU Bakersfield in a battle of No. 1 versus No. 2 in Western Athletic Conference play at the Icardo center on Thursday night. Despite leading late into the third quarter

NM State (12-10, 6-2 WAC) allowed CSU Bakersfield (13-10, 7-2 WAC) to open the game on a 5-0 run, but the Aggies quickly answered with a 7-0 run of their own to grab their first lead just 6:39 in. A scoring drought of 2:17 highlighted stout defense for each side before NM State closed out with the final three baskets of the first quarter to lead Bakersfield 16-11.

The beginning of the second quarter featured aggressive defensive play from each side prior to Gia Pack knocking down a three-pointer to open up the scoring at the 8:34 mark. The teams began to trade baskets before a media stoppage in which NM State led Bakersfield 24-20 with 4:39 remaining in the first half.

A four-point lead expanded for the Aggies but a buzzer-beating three for Bakersfield put the advantage back to four for NM State, 29-25, at the end of two quarters. Scoring for the Aggies was led by Pack and Brooke Salas who each had six points, followed by Monique Mills with five at the end of two.

Points in the paint were the difference maker through 20 minutes of action with NM State leading Bakersfield 12-6 down low. The Aggies also reeled in ten offensive rebounds to keep the pressure on the Roadrunners.

Emerging from the locker rooms, the Aggies held the four-point edge for the opening 4:42. CSU Bakersfield then hit a rhythm with a 6-0 run for the first lead change since the first quarter putting NM State behind 37-35.

Monique Mills was able to draw a foul before the end of the third and knock down both shots from the line to tie the game up 37-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bakersfield was able to regain the lead when the fourth opened with a 9-0 run put NM State behind 46-37. A three-pointer from M. Mills ended the run and opened the scoring for the Aggies in the fourth but the team still trailed by six.

Following a basket from each side, the Roadrunners went on another 6-0 run to expand the NM State deficit before Bakersfield called a timeout ahead 56-44 at the 2:23 mark.

The double-digit lead would last with the Crimson & White just able to cut the Roadrunners lead to 10 and the Aggies fell 62-52. Scoring for NM State was led by M. Mills with 12, followed by Tonishia Childress, Zaire Williams and Salas who each added eight.

New Mexico State is back in action for another road contest against WAC foe Grand Canyon on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. MT.
