NMSU Softball Wins A Pair On Day One At UTEP Tournament

EL PASO, TX - The New Mexico State softball team went undefeated during the first day of the UTEP Tournament at the Helen of Troy Field on Friday. The Aggies opened the tournament by taking down Portland State 7-3 and Idaho State 18-0. NM State tallied six home runs between the two games including a grand slam by sophomore Shelby Shultes.


Kayla Green earned the start in the circle for New Mexico State (6-3). The junior struggled after hitting a Viking batter with one out in the opening inning. A two-out double by Portland State (1-4) brought the runner home and the Aggies trailed 1-0 heading into their first at bat. However, NM State quickly overcame the deficit in the bottom of the inning when Fahren Glackin hit her first home run of the season, tying the game.

Green hit trouble again in the second when she gave up a single and hit a batter to start the inning. Head coach Kathy Rodolph made a change in the circle following the plays, bringing in Analise De La Roca to pitch. After recording her first out, De La Roca hit her next batter, loading the bases. The NM State defense stood behind the freshman, converting a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Aggie offense came alive when Rachel Rodriguez started the at bat with a leadoff single. After Glackin was hit by a pitch, Kelsey Horton scored the runners with a double to center field. Victoria Castro followed the junior with a double of her own, scoring Horton and giving NM State a 4-1 advantage. Nikki Butler added the final two runs to the rally by hitting a booming home run to left field for the team's second homer of the game.

After posting a scoreless top of the inning, New Mexico State looked to add to its 6-1 advantage when Rodriguez hit a single up the middle. Glackin picked up a walk, bringing Horton the plate. Following a passed ball by the Portland State catcher that advanced the runners, Horton hit a long sacrifice fly to right center field which scored Rodriguez, giving NM State the 7-1 lead.

The Vikings looked to rally as Alexis Morrison hit a pinch-hit homer to center field in the sixth. In the seventh, a Portland State batter reached base when she was hit by De La Roca. A double down the left field line scored the runner and Rodolph made a change in the circle following the play. Samaria Diaz came in to pitch and struck out the final batter, ending the game and securing NM State's 7-3 win over the Vikings.

De La Roca earned her first collegiate win the in the victory. The freshman pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four batters.


The Aggies offense came out hot to start the game against Idaho State (0-6). After Fahren Glackin reached on an error, Kelsey Horton hit a double to put runners on second and third with Nikki Butler at the plate. The sophomore hit her second home run of the day, clearing the bases and giving NM State a 3-0 lead. A double by Victoria Castro and a single by Amy Bergeson put runners on the corners with only one out in the inning. Back-to-back singles by Shelby Shultes and Nicole Spykstra scored the runners, extending NM State's 5-0 advantage.

After a scoreless second inning, New Mexico State resumed its dominance on offense. After Butler was hit by a pitch, Castro and Bergeson hit a pair of singles to load the bases. Shultes followed by hitting her first career home run, a grand slam, to give NM State a 9-0 lead. Rodriguez continued the rally with a double and the senior advanced on an error by the Bengals. Glackin singled through the right side, driving home the runner from third. The third homer of the game followed when Horton hit a long ball, extending the Aggies' 12-0 lead.

The offense remained assertive in the top of the fourth as Bergeson reached on a double to get the bats started. Shultes followed by hitting her second homer of the game to give New Mexico State the 14-0 lead, In the fifth, Kennedy Johnson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and another scoring rally for the team. Sarai Mejia walked and Spykstra hit a single, loading the bases for Jeanelle Medina. Medina was able to drive in a pair of runs with a single. After Anne Marie "Buddy" Vargas reached on a single, Glackin scored the final runs of the game with a single to right center field giving New Mexico State the 18-0 lead.

In the circle, Samaria Diaz pitched 4.0 innings and allowed just two hits while striking out a single Bengal batter. Mikayla Bongi closed out the 18-0 victory for the team, pitching 1.0 innings in the combined shutout. Diaz picked up the win moving the sophomore to 1-2 this season.

New Mexico State begins day two of the UTEP Tournament with a contest against Idaho State at 10:30 a.m. MT, on Saturday, Feb. 24.
