NMSU Men's Tennis Advances To WAC Tournament Championship Match

MESA, AZ - The New Mexico State men’s tennis team took on Grand Canyon in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Championship. A victory in the singles match clinched the 4-2 win for the Aggies over the Lopes. The victory moves the Crimson & White ahead for a rematch of last year’s championship against UMKC.

Grand Canyon struck first taking the doubles point to open the day. The Aggies fell in the doubles matches 6-1 and then 6-3 to give GCU the first point of the semifinal contest.

The Lopes then jumped out to a 2-0 lead then with the first win in singles. A three-set match fell in favor of the Lopes before the Aggies got rolling. In the third match, Sergi Espias won in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4, to earn the first point for NM State.

Then in the fifth match, Mauri Benitez took three sets to take down GCU’s Lucas Grego with a 6-3 victory to seal the second win for the Aggies. This was followed up in the fourth match where Enrique Asmar took his match in three sets to put NM State ahead 3-2.

The semifinal victory for the Crimson & White was then clinched in Match No. 6 when Louis Menard took down the Lopes Freddie Grant and sealed the Aggies 4-2 win in the semis. This also marked the 12th straight win for the Aggie freshman.

The New Mexico State men’s tennis team now looks to take down the reigning WAC champions in a rematch of last years final when it takes on UMKC on Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. MT.
