LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western Athletic Conference announced the 2018 All-WAC softball teams and major awards as selected by the league's head coaches on Tuesday night. New Mexico State had four members on the All-WAC First Team and two players on the All-WAC Second Team. Kelsey Horton took home the coveted WAC Player of the Year award for the second-straight season.
Horton dominated the diamond during her junior campaign as she led the league in batting average (.458) and slugging percentage (1.146) during conference play. The Aggies second baseman also slugged her way to the top of the WAC leaderboards for home runs (10) runs scored (20), hits (22), RBI (21), and total bases (55).
The junior joins elite company as she is the sixth WAC athlete and second NM State player to win a pair of WAC Player of the Year awards. New Mexico State graduate assistant coach Staci Rodriguez was the most recent two-time recipient of the accolade as she won the award in 2013 and 2015. This is also the sixth-straight season NM State has taken home the conference player of the year honor.
Nikki Butler received her second First Team All-WAC recognition as an Aggie. The sophomore hit .447 during league play to rank second in the conference while also posting a .766 slugging percentage, which ranked third among WAC players. Butler tied for first in the league with six doubles for the conference season and ranked just behind teammate Horton in hits (21) and RBI (18).
Fahren Glackin closed out her senior season with First-Team All-WAC honors. The Aggie first baseman tied for second in the league in walks (11) and hit by pitch (5). She stood alone in second for runs scored (13) while also recording a .537 on base percentage, which placed her in third among WAC players. Glackin hit .351 during conference play with one double, one triple, and one homer.
Kayla Green was named to the First Team All-WAC after an impressive season in the circle as the junior posted a team-best 2.42 ERA during league play. The right-handed pitcher went 5-1 against WAC opponents in her 11 appearances and threw three combined shutouts. She also recorded one save during her 46.1 innings of play.
Victoria Castro took home to the Second Team All-WAC honors for the third time in her career. The junior started every conference contest for the team and hit .348 against league opponents. She closed out conference play with a .565 slugging percentage and amassed three homers and a double against WAC opponents. The centerfielder also tallied a perfect fielding percentage during league play.
Rachel Rodriguez received Second Team All-WAC honors following her senior campaign. The Aggie shortstop closed out league play with a .303 batting average and a .378 on-base percentage. She had a pair of stolen bases in conference play and was tied for fifth in the WAC with 10 runs scored. This is the third-straight season Rodriguez has received All-WAC honors.
NM State hosts the 2018 WAC Softball Tournament from May 9-12. As the top seed overall, the Aggies earned a first-round bye and face the winner of the contest between fourth seeded Grand Canyon and fifth seeded CSU Bakersfield on May 10, at 10 a.m. MT.
