TEMPE, AZ - New Mexico State volleyball closed its run at the Sun Devil Classic at the Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday. The Aggies swept UT Arlington 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 to close its run at the tournament.

"We passed the ball better than we did yesterday, which was a nice sign. We managed the game better too, we made better decisions,' head coach Mike Jordan said. "I think the only bad stretch we had was late in that third set but fortunately we had a solid lead at that point. I saw improvement from yesterday to today. I thought we had a good performance from Savannah Davison, she attacked the ball pretty well. Overall, as a team to have a .324 hitting percentage and to stay low error was a big deal for us"

How it Happened

NM State (2-1) went back-and-forth with UTA (0-2) to start the match but a block by Ashley Anselmo and Lia Mosher ignited a six-point run, giving the Aggies a 15-8 advantage. New Mexico State held its lead and continued to dominate late in and on set point, Anselmo posted a solo block to close out the Aggies' 25-18 victory.

In the second set, New Mexico State came out hot, taking a 5-1 lead over the Mavericks, forcing UT Arlington to call a timeout. After going point-for-point with UTA, the Mavericks countered with a six-point rally, cutting the Aggies lead to a single point. Savannah Davison stopped the run with a cross court kill and NM State was able to build back its lead to seven ate in the set. A four-point rally with Jordan Pleasants serving brought the Aggies to set point and an Anselmo kill put gave New Mexico State the 25-14 win in the second set.

The Aggies looked to close out the match with a third set victory and the team battled for each point, and small runs gave the team 14-9 lead, forcing UTA to call a timeout. The NM State squad built on its lead late in the set and a three-point run with Megan Hart serving gave the Aggies a 19-11 advantage late in the set. UT Arlington did not go away and New Mexico State allowed a six-point run, cutting the Aggies' lead to two, before closing out the 25-23 victory.
