NMSU Volleyball Sweeps UT Martin

TUCSON, AZ - New Mexico State volleyball swept UT Martin at the McKale Center in the team's Wildcat Classic finale on Saturday. The Aggies defeated the Skyhawks 25-14, 25-12, 27-25 for the tournament victory.

"We played pretty efficiently today. I thought we served the ball pretty well in stretches, which was great," head coach Mike Jordan said. "We played good team defense and gave ourselves extra opportunities to score in transition. Overall, going 2-1 this weekend is not bad for this team. As young as we are to be 10-3, I'm fairly happy with that."

How it Happened

NM State (10-3) founds its rhythm early and an ace by Savannah Davison put the Aggies ahead of UTM (6-7) 8-3. New Mexico State expanded on its advantage and an off-speed kill by Megan Hart allowed NM State to lead by seven. The Aggies continued to dominate when a six-point run gave NM State the 22-12 lead and a kill by Hart closed out the opening set with New Mexico State winning 25-14.

The team battled back-and-forth early in the second set but a 14-point run, which started with a kill by Ashley Anselmo, allowed NM State to hold the 21-10 advantage. Maintaining the commanding lead, the Crimson and White kept its focus late in the set and a block by Cat Kelly and Hart closed out the 25-12 victory.

In the final set, a pair of service aces by Natalie Mikels gave the Aggies the early 6-5 lead and the squad built up its lead to four down the stretch, forcing the Skyhawks to call a timeout. However, the New Mexico State lead dwindled late in the set when a three-point rally by UT Martin tied the set 20-20. NM State went point-for-point with the Skyhawks and a kill by Savannah Davison followed by an attack error by UTM completed New Mexico State's 27-25 victory while also closing out the sweep of UT Martin.

NM State recorded 32 kills on hitting .223 while holding UT Martin to a .009 hitting percentage in the match. The Aggies also notched 41 digs, 32 assists and 14 blocks in the sweep.
