LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team dropped its Western Athletic Conference opener 3-0 to Utah Valley at the Soccer Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.

“We’re still trying to find that right combination of formation that gives us a good, solid backline while at the same time it allows us to be offensive minded,” said head coach Rob Baarts. “The change that we made today to try and adjust to something, I think we just had a hard time figuring that out and when we stopped figuring that out we lost our offense. I try to explain to the players that the reality is don’t overthink it, we will be set to get our offense back we just have to make sure that we get our back line squared up.”

Both sides came out firing with Katie Martinez getting a shot off just 20 seconds that went high while Ashley Martin made a save on a chance from UVU’s Sadie Brockbank in the 2nd minute.

The Wolverines (2-9-1) would break the seal and get on the board in the 10th minute when Amber Tripp found Sadie Brockbank in the middle of the box who then sent it in for a 1-0 lead. Utah Valley nearly extended its lead in the 13th minute but Martin made a save on a shot from Whitney Paskins.

Aileen Galicia had the opportunity to tie it up for NM State (1-10) in the 23rd but her attempt sailed wide of the mark.

From there, both defenses locked in for the remainder of the half with Martin keeping the score at 1-0 with a save in the 36th minute.

After the half, UVU wasted no time in extending its lead getting a goal from Leesa Stowe that tipped off Martin’s glove from 22 yards out and into the back of the net in the 51st minute.

Then, the Aggies almost pulled one back but Brooklyn Nielsen was able to make a leaping save on a header from Audriana Chavez in the 53rd minute.

The two teams again settled in defensively until the 79th minute when Stowe found a streaking Whitney Haskins who beat Martin to push the lead to 3-0 for the final goal of the match.

NM State was outshot 13-6 on the afternoon while taking 1 corner to UVU’s seven. Martin finished the game with three saves while Mia Montano faced no shots in seven minutes off the bench. Nielsen made one save for the Wolverines with Sarah Davis facing no chances in 10 minutes in relief.

“We go to keep our heads up,” added Baarts. “At the end of the day, this is going to hurt but you have to keep your head up. If we can keep our heads up, keep grinding, it’ll start clicking once we figure out what that line up is supposed to look like and we’ll start scoring some goals.”

The Aggies are back in action as they hit the road to take on WAC newcomer California Baptist on Friday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. (MT) before visiting preseason WAC favorite Kansas City on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 12 p.m. Both matches will be live streamed via the WAC Digital Network.
