DENVER, CO - The New Mexico State women’s tennis team swept the first set of month awards the league announced late Tuesday morning. Freshman Chloe Gavino was named the singles player of the month while the duo of Lindsay Harlas and Harsha Challa claimed doubles team of the month.

Gavino, a Tucson, Ariz., product had a great debut in the Crimson & White, going 4-0 in the White singles flight in 2018 Aggie Invitational. The freshman first took down rival UNM’s Madelyn Chavez 6-4, 6-0 before taking down her foe from UT Permian Basin 6-1, 6-2. Gavino then took down UTEP’s Rine Nozaki with ease 6-2, 6-0 prior to best teammate Quinty Janssen in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 for the title.

Playing together for the first time in competition, the Aggie duo of Lindsay Harlas and Harsha Challa dug deep to capture the doubles title. That run didn’t come easy with two of the four matches needing a third set with another going into tiebreaker for both sets.

Harlas and Challa’s route to victory was satisfying with wins over Battle of I-25 and Battle of I-10 rival teams in the semifinal and championship match – both in three sets.

New Mexico State will get another week of preparation before it heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for the ITA Mountain Regional Championships (Oct. 10-14) hosted by UNLV.
