KANSAS CITY, MO - The New Mexico State volleyball team faced Kansas City at the Swinney Recreation Center in a Western Athletic Conference clash on Thursday night. The Aggies swept the Roos 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 for their first road victory of conference play.

"I’m really proud of the team. With all the injuries we have, we played really well tonight” head coach Mike Jordan said. “I thought we won the serve and pass game. We did a good job blocking the ball. I was also impressed with what we were doing offensively in the middle of the floor.”

How it Happened

NM State (13-5, 3-2 WAC) came out hot against UMKC (13-6, 4-1 WAC) and following a block by Savannah Davison and Julianna Salanoa that put New Mexico State ahead 6-2, the Roos called a timeout. After the break, the Aggies continued to roll and a three-point run allowed the team to pull ahead 13-6. NM State continued to dominate late in the opening set, holding a nine-point advantage after a kill by Cat Kelly. A kill by Davison gave the squad set point and Tatyana Battle finished off the 25-15 victory with a kill of her own.

New Mexico State held its momentum going into the second set and a UMKC error allowed NM State to jump out to a 10-5 lead. However, a run by the Roos saw the Aggie advantage dwindle to a single point. A roll-shot kill by Davison snapped the run by the opposition but the damage was done and the teams went back-and-forth during the points that followed. A three-point run put NM State ahead 14-12 down the stretch and a kill by Battle off an assist from Natalie Mikels started a four-point rally that gave New Mexico State the 18-13 advantage late in the set. The Aggies maintained their lead and an off-speed kill by Davison allowed New Mexico State to take the second set 25-19.

In the third set, the Aggies went ahead 6-4 early but NM State allowed a four-point rally before calling a timeout. Trailing by two, a kill by Julianna Salanoa snapped the run and kill by Kelly gave the Crimson and White the 10-9 advantage. New Mexico State continued to battle down the stretch and a Kansas City error put the Aggies ahead 19-15. A late run by the Roos pulled UMKC within a pair but Davison sealed the 25-20 victory in the third set with a kill and the team completed the sweep.

By The Numbers

New Mexico State recorded 42 kills on hitting .352 in the victory while holding UMKC to a .092 hitting percentage. NM State also posted 39 assists, 33 digs and 13 blocks during the sweep. Battle led all players with 13 kills. Salanoa was a block shy of a double-double when she tallied a career best nine block assists and 10 kills.

The Aggies’ road trip continues when the team faces Chicago State at 11 a.m. MT on Saturday, Oct. 6. New Mexico State volleyball is back at the Pan American Center on Oct. 18, when the squad takes on Utah Valley.
