LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team defeated Chicago State 2-1 at the Soccer Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon to pick up its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season.

“It was definitely a great first half performance, we had multiple scoring opportunities in the first half,” said head coach Rob Baarts. “We created a lot in the second half but I think we took for granted the first half and thought the second half was going to be a lot easier than it was and we made that game much more difficult than we needed to.”

The Aggies (2-13, 1-4 WAC) dominated on both sides of the ball in the first half, recording 15 shots to just two for the Cougars (0-14-1, 0-6).

Audriana Chavez nearly got the scoring going in the 12th minute but Judith Sorribes was there for the save. Chavez put another shot on frame in the 19th minute which was also saved, while Aileen Galicia missed wide in the 22nd minute.

Then, a shot from Rebecca Mazzie was stopped by Sorribes but the rebound went straight to Chavez who controlled the ball and knocked it in from two yards to give NM State a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. It was Chavez’s first goal of the season.

New Mexico State wasted no time in extending its lead as Emma Smith played a perfect cross in the 30th minute to Chavez in the box who headed it near post for her second goal of the match and a 2-0 Aggie lead. This goal gave Chavez her third career multi-goal game which moved her into a third place tie in the NM State record book.

Chavez nearly recorded a hat trick by the end of the half but Sorribes was there to make the save on a header in the 35th. Smith almost got a goal of her own in the 40th but Sorribes was again there for the stop and the Aggies headed into the half with a 2-0 lead.

NM State came out of the half and controlled possession early as the ball rarely left the Aggies’ offensive third for the first 20 minutes of the half. During that time, New Mexico State had a number of great opportunities but saves from Sorribes on shots from Galicia, Chavez and Mazzie in the 58th, 64th and 66th minutes respectively kept the score at 2-0.

Then, in the 69th minute, Chicago State had an opportunity to get one back but Ashley Martin was there to make the save on a shot from Kristy Ashworth.

However, the Cougars would get a goal back in the 74th minute thanks to Sara Quevedo. Quevedo beat her defender and then dribbled around Martin when she rushed out of the box to put the ball in the back of an empty net to cut the lead to 2-1.

Mazzie nearly pushed the lead back to two right away in the 75th minute, but Sorribes was there to make the stop while another shot on frame from Galicia in the 78th minute was also saved by the freshman.

Chicago State had a chance to tie it in the 81st minute but Martin was there to make the save on a shot from Aanika Stevens. CSU had two more opportunities but a shot from Samara Silva on a free kick missed high in the 85th minute while shot from Lauren Reiber went wide in the 87th minute.

From there, the Aggies were able to run out the clock for a final tally of 2-1.

NM State outshot the Cougars 32-7 on the afternoon, recording 14 shots on goal to just two from CSU. Sorribes made 14 saves while Martin finished with two and the Aggies also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Chavez, a senior from Rio Rancho, N.M., set new career highs in shots (11) and shots on goal (7) while her two goals tied her career high. It was the first time an Aggie scored two goals or more since Devin Hart and Galicia both recorded hat tricks at Chicago State on Oct. 20, 2017.

“I would have liked to have seen us close the game out in the beginning of the second half which would have also allowed us to put a lot more players in and give them some more playing time,” added Baarts. “Unfortunately we had to stick with what we had and grind out the win. I’m super proud that girls were able to grind out a good win.”

New Mexico State is back in action s it hits the road for the final time in WAC play, visiting Grand Canyon on Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. (MT) before traveling to CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. Both matches will be available on live stream from the WAC Digital Network.
