LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team hosted CSU Bakersfield at the Pan American Center on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies swept the Roadrunners 25-13, 25-20, 25-20.

"I believe we won the serve and pass battle today. We were good defensively, Ben [Wallis] put a good scout in place,” head coach Mike Jordan said. “I think we did a good job of slowing [CSU Bakersfield] down a bit, which was different than the first time we played them. Overall, I’m happy with the effort.”

How it Happened

NM State (17-5, 7-2 WAC) could not find a rhythm early in the set and trailed CSUB (11-11, 4-5 WAC) 6-3 following an ace by the 'Runners. A kill by Tatyana Battle, off an assist from Briana Ainsworth, tied the opening set but a service error by the Aggies left the squad behind by one. Back-and-forth the teams fought but with Battle serving, New Mexico State took a four-point lead after a kill by Julianna Salanoa. Following the play, CSU Bakersfield called a timeout to stop the momentum but the Aggies remained in control, taking the 20-10 advantage to force CSUB to take its second timeout. New Mexico State continued to roll and an attack error by the 'Runners gave the Aggies the 25-13.

The momentum from the first set continued for New Mexico State when the Aggies took an 8-2 lead following an error by CSUB. A four-point run by the opposition put the 'Runners within a point of New Mexico State but a kill by Megan Hart snapped the rally. A service error by CSU Bakersfield sparked a four-point run for NM State that put the Aggies ahead 19-15 late in the set. A kill by Battle brought the squad to set point and an attack error by the opposition secured the 25-20 victory for New Mexico State.

In the third set, NM State cruised to a 7-3 advantage following a kill by Hart. A rally with Battle behind the service line put New Mexico State ahead 15-8, resulting in a timeout by the 'Runners. The Aggies kept a steady lead and a block by Hart and Savannah Davison put NM State ahead 20-11. A late rally by the CSU Bakersfield dropped the Aggie advantage to four but Ainsworth went to Hart in the middle to stop the run. A kill by Battle brought on match point and a block by Cat Kelly and Salanoa closed out the 25-20 victory and the sweep of CSUB.

By The Numbers

NM State recorded 33 kills on hitting .194 while holding the ‘Runners to 30 kills and a .000 hitting clip. New Mexico State also tallied 44 digs, 30 assists and 13 blocks in the win.
