CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - New Mexico State softball closed out the Mary Nutter Classic with a contest against Ohio State on Sunday morning. The Aggies fell to the Buckeyes 5-1 in the tournament finale.

How It Happened
NM State (9-5) got behind early when starting pitcher Samaria Diaz gave up a solo home run over the centerfield fence to Ohio State (8-4). After an easy second that included a pair of strikeouts for the junior, Diaz fell into trouble during the third when the Buckeyes loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a hit batter. The pitcher escaped the jam when the next batter grounded out, keeping New Mexico State’s deficit at just a run.

Diaz struggled again in the fourth when she allowed a double and a triple that put NM State behind 2-0. Head coach Kathy Rodolph made a change in the circle and brought in Kayla Green to contain the Ohio State offense. The senior faltered, allowing two more runs to score which left the Aggies trailing the opposition 4-0. A scoreless bottom of the inning followed but Green gave up another run in the top of the fifth, expanding NM State’s deficit.

After a scoreless sixth for both teams, the Aggies went into the seventh in search of their first hit, down 5-0. Nikki Butler broke up the Buckeyes' no hitter with a single to right field to start the at-bat and Mya Felder followed with a double, putting the New Mexico State runners in scoring position without an out recorded. Caity Szczesny grounded out to the second baseman but NM State scored to cut into the Buckeyes' lead. However, the play scored the only run for New Mexico State as the team fell 5-1 in its tournament finale.

Diaz picked up the loss, moving the junior to 3-2 on the season. She pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. She also posted five strikeouts during the outing. Green went 3.2 inning and gave up two runs on five hits while also recording two strikeouts.

For their next contest, the Aggies return to Las Cruces, N.M., to face No. 14. Arizona on Tuesday, March 5. First pitch from the doubleheader is set for 3:30 MT.
