MIAMI, FL - New Mexico State football linebacker Terrill Hanks signed as an undrafted free agent on Saturday, April 27, and will join his hometown team, the Miami Dolphins.

“This is a proud day for NM State Football as we celebrate with Terrill signing with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent,” Aggie head coach Doug Martin said. “Terrill has worked hard to get to this moment and we are all excited for him and grateful he chose New Mexico State to be the program to show his talent to the football world. He has all the work ethic and talent to be a star in the NFL!”

When asked about signing with his hometown team, Hanks had this to say from his home in Key Largo, Fla., “Never get discouraged! He’s always on time!”

The 6-3 linebacker finished his four-year career in Las Cruces with 396 total tackles, good for fourth all-time in the Aggie history books. Hanks also had 41 career starts with 100-plus tackles in three of his four seasons in the Crimson & White.

Hanks’ career at NM State was highlighted by the knockdown of a shovel pass in the red zone and fumble recovery in the 2017 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl that eventually led to the Aggies snapping a 57-year bowl victory drought. He finished that game with 10 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and pass break up.

The Miami, Fla., product wrapped up his breakout junior season in 2017 with 111 total tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, eight pass deflections and two forced fumbles with a fumble recovery. His 8.5 tackles per game was good for fifth-best in the Sun Belt that season while his 15.0 tackles for loss was good for fourth and his 7.0 sacks ranked fourth in the league. At season’s end, Hanks earned as an All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention.

His senior season saw him register 101 tackles on the season in just nine games with 9.0 tackles for loss, three pass deflections, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. His sophomore campaign was much the same, recording 103 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, seven pass deflections and two forced fumbles with a fumble recovery. Hanks was named to the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer Team as a freshman after tallying 81 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss, four pass deflections, a forced fumbled and a fumble recovery.
