NMSU Softball Advances To Winners Bracket With 1-0 Walkoff Win Over GCU In Extra Innings

PHOENIX, AZ - New Mexico State softball opened its run at the Western Athletic Conference tournament with a contest against host Grand Canyon at GCU Softball Stadium on Thursday. The second-seeded Aggies topped the third-seeded Lopes 1-0 with Kelsey Horton hitting a walk-off home run during the victory.

NM State (32-20) and GCU (31-23) went scoreless through the first six innings of the game with starting pitchers Samaria Diaz and Ryan Denhart battling in the circle.

Diaz posted a scoreless top of the seventh, the New Mexico State squad had a chance to rally in the bottom of the frame. Brandy Hernandez reached on a single with two outs on the board but the runner was stranded when a groundout ended the inning.

The junior pitcher gave up a two-out single in the eighth but struck out the final batter to end the top of the frame. Horton was the first batter for NM State in the bottom of the inning and the senior recorded a homer, giving New Mexico State the 1-0 victory in extra innings.

Diaz moved to 15-8 with the victory, pitching 8.0 innings. The junior allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

NM State advance the winner's bracket with the victory and the Aggie squad is set to face off against top-seeded Seattle U on Friday, May 10, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT.
