NMSU Softball's Diaz And Butler Earn NFCA All-Region Honors

LOUISVILLE, KY - New Mexico State softball's Samaria Diaz and Nikki Butler were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pacific Region Third Team on Thursday. This is the first honor from the NFCA for both Diaz and Butler.

After a stellar season in the circle, Diaz was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, She led the league in strikeouts (100), batters struck out looking (24) wins (7) and saves (3) during conference games. The junior's 228 strikeouts paced the WAC this season and currently puts Diaz in 21stnationally. The pitcher broke NM State's single-season record for saves with seven and her 11 career saves tied Celisha Walker's record at New Mexico State. Diaz closed out the season with a 16-9 record and a 2.10 ERA.

Butler was named the WAC Player of the Year for the first time in her career following the 2019 regular season. The catcher led the conference with four home runs against league opponents while also placing fifth for hits (22) and on-base percentage (.453). In games against WAC foes, she ranked sixth in total bases (36), seventh in slugging percentage (.632) and eighth in batting average (.386). Butler broke her own single-season hit by pitch record by getting plunked 18 times during her junior campaign. She currently sits 15th nationally for getting hit 0.33 times per game.

A total of 392 players representing 163 different institutions comprise this season's regional teams. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region.

New Mexico State closed out the 2019 season at 33-22 with a 12-6 record against conference opponents. Five Aggies were named to the First Team All-WAC and Kathy Rodolph was named the WAC Coach of the Year.
