LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State women’s basketball head coach Brooke Atkinson announced the signing of graduate transfer Micayla Buckner on Friday.

“Micayla is a dynamic post who can score both inside and out,” Atkinson said. “Her ability to block shots in the paint means that she’ll be the anchor of our defense. Her experience and maturity will allow her to be an immediate impact.”

Buckner comes to the Land of Enchantment after stints at Baylor, Collin College and North Texas. As a senior at Naaman Forest High School, Buckner averaged 11 points and 12 rebounds per game and was a McDonald’s All-America nominee. Also in high school, the Garland, Texas, native earned First Team All-District honors three times and was named the District 11-5A Defensive Player of the Year following the 2011-12 season.

After high school, Buckner signed with Baylor where she was part of the 2014-15 Big 12 championship squad before transferring to Collin College. The 6-4 forward averaged 11.1 points and 8.1 rebounds on 48.4 percent shooting in her lone season in McKinney. Buckner also earned NJCAA First Team All-Region V honors and led the Lady Cougars to a program record 26 wins.

Buckner then joined North Texas for two seasons. During her time in Denton, the graduate transfer averaged 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while her 167 rebounds for the 2017-18 season ranked second on the squad and her 35 blocks were first. Also during the 2017-18 season, the post recorded two double-doubles and dropped a career-high 20 points against Texas A&M International on Nov. 14, 2017.

New Mexico State will look to win its sixth-straight Western Athletic Conference Championship in the 2019-20 season.
