VERMILLION, S.D. - Freshman Hannah Leitner scored the first goal of her career but the New Mexico State women’s soccer dropped a 5-2 decision at South Dakota on Thursday afternoon.

Both sides started the game solid defensively, with Dmitri Fong making saves in the 9th and 10th minutes. Then, NM State (1-6-2) saw its first opportunity of the game but a header from Katie Martinez off a free kick was saved in the 15th minute and Emma Smith’s follow-up in the 16th minute was also stopped by the Coyotes (5-5).

However, South Dakota got rolling offensively starting with a goal off a corner kick in the 21st minute. The Coyotes quickly followed that score up with a goal in the 21st and another goal off a corner kick in the 24th minute to take a 3-0 lead.

Jody Hernandez almost got one back for the Aggies but her shot in the 31st minute was saved. Then, in the 36th minute, Alexa Barrera received a ball just past midfield and played it long down the left flank to Leitner who made one touch and then sped past her defender before finish for her first goal in the Crimson and White.

NM State nearly cut the deficit again before the half but a Leitner breakaway was snuffed out and Amy Gulczynski’s attempt in the 43rd was saved and the Aggies trailed 3-1 at the break.

South Dakota continued to control the pace of the match as it tested Mia Montano, who checked in at the half, with shots on goal in the 47th and 48th minutes that were both saved. However, the Coyotes pressure would eventually pay off as they added goals in the 53rd and 56th minutes to extend their lead to 5-1.

Montano then added saves in the 62nd and 72nd minutes before Shea O’Connor found Alexa Barrera in the box who made a move to slip her defender and finished with her left foot for her second goal of the season in the 78th minute. Barrera also had tries in the 87th and 90th minutes but both were saved and the Aggies fell 5-2.

New Mexico State posted nine shots with eight of those on goal while Fong and Montano made five saves each.

The Aggies now wrap up their non-conference schedule at South Dakota State on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. (MT). That match is set to stream live on gojacks.com.
