LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept Chicago State 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 to pick up its ninth-straight victory and remain undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play in Chicago on Saturday. NM State’s 17-3 record matches its best start since 2007.

“I thought we played reasonably well in stretches,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “The first set we were a step slow but we got it together. As it gets deeper into October, our expectations continue to go up. We’re on a quest to be a great team, we have to play a little bit cleaner but to go the road get a win, we’ll take it.”

The Aggies (17-3, 8-0 WAC) fell behind 5-2 early in the first set but two kills from Savannah Davison helped toe the set at 5-5. The two teams traded points until a kill from Cat Kelly and two from Julianna Salanoa gave NM State a 13-9 lead. The Aggies continued to build on that, stretching its lead to 19-11. However, Chicago State (5-17, 0-8) battled back, eventually making the score 24-22 before a kill from Salanoa put away the set with a kill.

NM State and Chicago State traded points and were tied 10-10. After the Aggies took a 17-15 lead, they scored five of the next six points to stretch their lead to 22-16 thanks to a kill from Salanoa. Then, the Cougars had a service error before a kill from Salanoa and an attack error gave the Aggies set two 25-18. NM State held Chicago State to just .030 hitting in the set.

Chicago State opened the third set by taking a 9-8 lead. However, that’s when NM State came alive, scoring six-straight to go up 14-9. As they had all match, CSU battled back, closing the gap to 19-16 before New Mexico State closed on a 6-2 run for a 15-18 win in set three and a sweep of the Cougars. Kelly recorded six kills in the set.

Individually, Kelly and Davison led the squad with 11 kills each while Natalie Mikels added 20 assists. Salanoa hit .600 to go with nine kills and Analyssa Acosta recorded 18 digs on the night.

As a team, the Aggies hit .303 while holding Chicago State to just a .144 hitting percentage. NM State also recorded 12 blocks to six for the Cougars and hit 40 kills to 38 for Chicago State.

New Mexico State is back in action when it returns to the Mesilla Valley on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. (MT) to host WAC foe Utah Valley.
