NMSU Volleyball Sweeps Seattle To Stay Perfect In WAC Play

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Cat Kelly and Savannah Davison combined for 29 kills and the New Mexico State Volleyball team ran its winning streak to 11 games with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 sweep over Western Athletic Conference rival Seattle U on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies (19-3, 9-0) got off to a fast start, opening a 16-8 lead on Seattle U (10-14, 1-9) midway through the first set. After the media timeout, the Redhwaks scored two-straight points before kills from Lia Mosher and Davison sparked an 8-1 NM State run for a 24-11 lead. However, Seattle U went on a 5-0 run of its own to cut the Aggie lead to 24-16. Then, Kelly crushed a kill to put the set away, 25-16.

In the second set, NM State led 10-7 after a kill from Davison but the Redhwaks stormed back to take an 11-10. It was all Aggies from there, as they stepped on the gas and ended the set on a 14-6 run for a 25-16 win in set two.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, Seattle U came out swinging in the third set and held a 12-10 lead over the Aggies. However, Julianna Salanoa jump started a NM State run with a kill that put the Aggies ahead 14-12. After Kelly put away a kill to give the Aggies a 24-18 lead in the set, the Redhawks continued to battle and but the deficit to 24-21. Then, Salanoa crushed a kill from the middle for a 25-21 victory and an Aggie sweep.

The Aggies hit a red-hot .303 on the afternoon with Davison recording 16 kills and Kelly 13. This was Davison’s 8th-straight match with double-digit kills. Davison hit a scorching .414 while Kelly posted a new career-high with a phenomenal .524 hitting percentage. Kelly committed just two errors on 21 swings.

NM State was also locked in defensively as it held Seattle U to a .000 hitting percentage while forcing 25 attack errors. Salanoa recorded six blocks, Hart five and Ashley Anselmo four. Natalie Mikels recorded a service ace, giving the setter seven-straight matches with at least one service ace.

New Mexico State is back in action when it hosts California Baptist in a WAC home match on Monday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. (MT). As always, students receive free entry to all Aggie home matches with a valid student I.D.
