LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team fell to Battle of I-10 rival UTEP 63-57 at the Pan American Center on Wednesday night. Aaliyah Prince scored 22 points, her third-straight 20 point game to start the season.

The game started back-and-forth with a layup from Adrianna Henderson giving NM State (1-2, 0-0 WAC) a 12-11 lead at the media timeout. UTEP (2-0, 0-0 C-USA) mounted a quick 5-0 lead out of the timeout to lead 16-12 at the two-minute mark. However, the Aggies went on a run of their own, capped by two Gia Pack free throws with one second in the first, to lead 17-16 heading into the second quarter.

After Adenike Aderinto made a layup to start the second, NM State extended its lead to 25-18 after a pair of Prince free throws with 7:21on the clock. However, the Miners locked down on defense and went on a 10-2 run to take a 28-27 lead with 3:36 to play in the half. With UTEP leading 33-29 with 50 seconds in the second, Amanda Soderqvist knocked down a three to cut the Aggie deficit to 33-32 at the half.

UTEP quickly ran its lead to 40-32 out of the half before Rodrea Echols knocked down a three to end the Miner run. Henderson then made two free throws and Shania Harper made a layup before Henderson got to the rim to cut the lead to one, 42-41, with 3:28 in the third. UTEP hit a jumper before tied it up at 44 with another three. After three free throws from the Miners, Prince made two of her own with 38 seconds to play in the third and the Aggies trailed 47-46 at the end of the quarter.

Henderson opened the fourth with a jumper to give NM State a 48-47 lead. The teams then traded baskets with Prince stealing a pass and making a fast-break layup to make it 53-51 Aggies with 7:25 to play. Again, UTEP battled back and tied the game 57-47 with 2:55 left on the clock. After the Miners’ Katarina Zec hit a three to break the tie with 1:59 to play, the Aggies’ offense stalled and UTEP hit clutch free throws for a final of 63-57 Miners.

NM State held UTEP to 39-percent shooting but only shot .328 itself. The Aggies forced 12 turnovers and added 10 assists. Prince led the way with her third-consecutive 20-point game to start the season with 22 points. Soderqvist added nine with three made three-pointers while Henderson scored eight.

The Aggies are back in action when the Battle of I-25 comes to the Mesilla Valley on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. Fans unable to attend can tune into the WAC Digital Network for a live stream or listen to the radio call on 91.5FM KRUX.
