LAS VEGAS, NV - The New Mexico State (10-6), 0-0 WAC) softball team won its first game of the day 8-0 against UTEP in five innings before dropping a 6-4 contest in eight innings to Boyd Gaming Classic host UNLV on Saturday in Las Vegas.

GAME ONE
The Aggies took on UTEP in the Battle of I-10 for their first game of the day.

Jeanelle Medina led off the first with a bunt single and stole second base before Hailey Tanori singled up the middle to score the run and she advanced to third on the throw. Nikki Butler then scored Tanori with an RBI Single of her own to make it 2-0. Then, Ramsay Lopez blew the game open with her sixth home run of the season to make it 4-0 Aggies.

With Chloe Rivas dealing on the mound, the Aggies added three more runs in the fourth courtesy of a Lopez sacrifice fly, a throwing error by the Miner’s catcher and a Rivas single to make it 7-0.

After Felicia De La Torre shut the Miners out in the top of fifth, Gabby Aragon drew a bases loaded walk to walk-off the run rule 8-0 victory.

Rivas pitched four and a third shutout innings and went 2-3 from the plate. In her first start of the year, Sarai Mejia went 2-2 at the dish.

The Aggies also turned a triple play in the top of the third inning, the Aggies first triple play since March 21, 2015 against #17 Arizona.

GAME TWO
After taking down the Miners, the Aggies played against tournament host UNLV for the second time this weekend.

NM State threatened in the first when a double from Lopez put runners on second and third with two outs but the Aggies were unable to plate a run. Matalasi Faapito shut the Rebels out in the bottom half of the first and second innings before UNLV struck for two runs in the bottom of the third.

New Mexico State had another great chance to score in the top of the 4th with a runner on second and no outs but the next three batters all got out to end the threat. Both teams pitching locked in until the top of the sixth inning.

Lopez led off the sixth with her second home run of the day and Shelby Shultes hit a two-out, two-run home run to put NM State ahead 3-2. However, the Rebels struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, 4-3. Then, with the Aggies down to their last out, Nikki Butler came through clutch with a solo shot to tie the game at four.

De La Torre shut the Rebels out in the bottom if the seventh and the game went to extras. NM State had a runner on third with two outs in the top half of the eighth but couldn’t score the run and UNLV hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth for a 6-4 final score.

Butler finished 2-3 at the plate while Lopez went 2-2 and drew two walks.
