LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State’s head coach Orin Richburg announced Thursday, Aug. 23 the hire of Paul Harkins as the assistant cross country for the Aggies. Harkins brings six years of coaching experience, along with an impressive athletic career to Las Cruces.
Harkins main responsibilities will include the training of the cross country men’s and women’s teams, along with the middle distance track and field runners. He will also assist in recruiting and day-by-day operations of the program.
Richburg believes that Harkins is a great addition to the program. Harkins was coached by Richburg at the University of Washington and completely understands Harkins work ethic and his commitment to excellence, which have carried over into coaching.
“He understands what it takes to be successful and to go to the next level,” Richburg said. “He also understands the priorities of the program, specifically the priorities of our student-athletes, teaching them to build character and to represent the school and community with pride and respect.”
Prior to NMSU, Harkins was an assistant coach with the Brown Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country team. His main responsibility is working with the distance and middle distance runners, along with coordinating all aspects of recruiting and fundraising activities.

Before heading to Missouri, Harkins spent three seasons as the head cross country coach as Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Wa.
Harkins received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Washington in 2000, and went on to obtain a Masters of Science in Health Promotion and Wellness Management at Missouri State University in 2006.
While attending Washington, Harkins was a four-year letter-winner on the Track and Field team and was also the captain of the cross country team. He was a three-time qualifier for Track and Field Pacific-10 Conference Championships. At Missouri State, Harkins was a graduate assistant for both the men's and women's Track and Field and Cross Country teams.
