Aggies Tie Montana In Season Opener 1-1

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - For only the second time in school history, the New Mexico State soccer team ended a match tied after 110 minutes. The Aggies posted a 1-1 tied with Montana after double overtime in NM State’s 2010 season opener.

“I think it was better than on Friday, and this is a work in progress,” head coach Michael Needham said. “As far as our kids’ battle and resolve, to go from 1-0 down to come back and make it 1-1, I was very proud of them for that.”

Sophomore forward Yolanda McMillion tied the match at 1-1 in the 67th minute when sophomore midfielder/forward Crystal Burns found her in the middle of the box. Both the score and assist were the first of the season.

The Aggies trailed 1-0 after Montana’s senior forward Kaitlyn Heinsohn found her own rebound in the middle of the box and scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute of action.  Continue Reading This Post >>

The Daily Aggie :: 08/22/10

The Aggie volleyball team swept the alumni 3-0 last night but needed to come from behind to do so. Be sure to check out the photos from last night's match.

The Aggie soccer team is back in action today at 6:00 p.m. at Aggie Memorial Stadium when they attempt to officially kick off the soccer season. The Aggies' opponent today, Montana, played in Albuquerque on Friday night and got drilled by the Lobos 7-0, it was 3-0 within the first 22 minutes of the match.

As you know, the Aggies' season opener against UTEP was cancelled due to bad weather so they haven't officially played a match yet. However, the Montana match tonight provides sort of a "do-over" for the Aggies. They know some of what they needed to work on from Friday night's first half and we expect that the Aggies will come out ready again tonight.

The match can be heard on KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski calling the exciting action. The match can also be heard online via Aggie Access (subscription required) with streaming video also available.

Aggies Break Away From Alumni To Pull Off Sweep

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept the Alumni in the Annual Alumni Match at the Pan American Center, Saturday, Aug. 21.

Led by senior outside hitter Kayleigh Giddens, who posted 20 kills, the Aggies were able to pull away from the Alums to get the sweep. Head coach Mike Jordan was pleas with the challenge the alumni presented and got a feel of where his team stands.

"I was pleased with a lot of things we did tonight and alumni played great, hitting very few errors, which put a lot of pressure on us," Jordan said. "The veterans played well and did a good job of leading when the games were close. We got a lot of young players on the team, but they did well for us tonight."  Continue Reading This Post >>

The Daily Aggie :: 08/21/10

For the Aggie soccer team last season was a season of firsts every time they took the field. This season however, they notched another first. Their first no-contest. The continuation of the Aggie/Miner rivalry will have to wait as a severe storm halted play after the teams went in for halftime. UTEP was leading 1-0 on a corner kick by Katie Dorman in the 14th minute. The Aggies had a few good chances to score as did UTEP but for the most part, the defenses did pretty well. Since the game resulted in a no-contest, none of the statistics are official. Sadly, the attendance is not official either as there were estimates of a crowd of over 2,000 people.

That being said, yesterday's statistics at halftime are as follows:
Shots: UTEP 15, NM State 7
Saves: NM State 7, UTEP 4
Fouls: UTEP 6, NM State 5
Corner Kicks: UTEP 6, NM State 3

No word on whether or not the match will be rescheduled but as we noted in last night's article, if the match is reschedule, it must be played in it's entirety, the full 90 minutes.

The Aggie volleyball team will take on the alumni tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Pan Am. Jason Groves has the alumni roster list in his preview.

And as you may have noticed, we posted our 2010 Aggie Volleyball Preview (See? When we promise something, we deliver, sometimes even earlier than we promised!)

For most teams a 20-9 record and a second place finish in conference is considered a good season but when you're New Mexico State and you're accustomed to making the NCAA Tournament, a season without a trip to the NCAAs is disappointing.

The Aggies lose a trio of valuable seniors in outside hitter Krista Altermatt, middle blocker Erin Birmingham and right-side hitter Kelli Goodan. Altermatt finished third on the team in kills last season with 242 while Birmingham finished second on the team in total blocks and was a Second Team All-WAC selection. The good news for the Aggies is that they return all four of their First Team All-WAC selections from last season in middle blocker Kelsey Brennan, setter Jennah DeVries, outside hitter Kayleigh Giddens and right-side attacker Whitney Woods. The quartet was tabbed as Preseason All-WAC selections and is the core set of returnees from last year's team. "That's a pretty good core returning group," said head coach Mike Jordan. "Those four have played a lot in their careers, obviously in crunch time we're going to look for them to make plays for us."

The Aggies have a large influx of younger players and with some youth playing behind the starters, Coach Jordan feels that his four All-Conference players will provide solid leadership for the younger players. "They're all really good people and are going to be very helpful with younger players on the team," said Coach Jordan. "I think this will be a much stronger leadership group than we had a year ago."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Soccer Season Opener Against UTEP Results In A No Contest

With UTEP leading 1-0 at halftime after scoring on a corner kick in the 14th minute, a lengthy weather delay that included heavy rains and lightning forced the 2010 women's soccer season opener against I-1 rival UTEP to result in a no contest. Per NCAA rules, a match must restart within three hours from the start of the match.

There must be no lightning in the area for 30 minutes prior to the restart and at 9:30 there was still lightning in the area making it impossible for the match to restart three hours after the 7:00 p.m. start.

Neither the attendance count or the statistics will not count towards the official season statistics.

Should the game be rescheduled, it must be replayed in its entirety.

Below are the official NCAA rules regarding lightning delays and suspensions of games:  Continue Reading This Post >>

The Daily Aggie :: 08/20/10

Well, as you can see, our Aggie Volleyball Preview hasn't been posted. We're still working on it and we PROMISE to get it posted on Monday. And when we promise something, we mean it unlike Nevada and Fresno State (sorry, we couldn't resist).

All kidding aside, today is a great day because the 2010-2011 Aggie athletic season officially kicks off tonight! That's right, you've been waiting all summer for Aggie sports to get going again and the day is here. Tonight the Aggies take on I-10 rival UTEP in what promises to be an electric, intense rivalry game. What better way to christen the new athletic season than with a rivalry game?

Everyone remembers what happened down in El Paso last year right? Well, if you don't, watch this video:

That should get your blood flowing for tonight's match.

Be sure to check out our preview of the 2010 Aggie soccer team as well as our interview this week with head coach Michael Needham.

The Aggies should be a much better offensive team this season. The Aggies have a couple of highly regarded freshmen in Mary Kate Koziol and Dani De La Vina who should bring some spark to the offense. We're excited to see what Crystal Burns will do this season. She established herself as perhaps the best offensive threat as she demonstrated that she can turn and fire from any place at any time.

The one big question mark for the Aggies is at goal keeper. We'll have to wait and see who has earned the starting nod in tonight's match. Three Aggies, all with limited college experience (two with none) are competing for that spott. Sophomore Jess Schutter has 55 minutes of college experience playing a little bit last season behind Katie Graul. However, she has been injured much of the preseason and was supposed to be cleared earlier this week. Mikaela Bitner is a redshirt freshman and Erin Wosick is a true freshman. One thing is for certain, the returning Aggie defenders will need to play very well in the early part of the season as whoever the Aggie goal keeper is adjusts to the college level.

The match will start at 7:00 p.m. at Aggie Memorial Stadium and can be heard on KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski calling the action. Streaming audio and video are available via Aggie Access (subscription required).
