NMSU Baseball Falls To No. 4 Texas Tech 6-4

MIDLAND, TX - The New Mexico State baseball team squared off against No. 4 Texas Tech on Tuesday night at Security Bank Ballpark. The Aggies grabbed the lead early but could not hang on as the Red Raiders got the win, 6-4.

How it happened
NM State (23-15, 8-1 WAC) sent right-hander Andy Frakes to the bump to open the contest against Texas Tech (32-8, 8-4 Big 12) freshman Jake McDonald.

Each team threatened to score in the opening inning with Brent Sakurai leading off the game with a double to left field to put himself in scoring position with no outs, but the Red Raiders escaped the inning. Then with two outs in the bottom half, Texas Tech’s clean-up hitter crushed a ball to deep left field but Austin Botello reached up and robbed a ball at the wall to hold the opponent scoreless in the first.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Falls In Doubleheader To No. Arizona

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State softball fell to No. 3 Arizona in a doubleheader on Tuesday as the Wildcats defeated the Aggies 8-0 and 11-1.

Game One

Kayla Green started in the circle for the Aggies (20-19, 8-1). The sophomore fell behind early as she gave up a home run to Dejah Mulipola for the first run of the game. The homer started a rally for Arizona (43-3, 13-2) as Katiyana Mauga followed Mulipola's homer with a single. After Arizona singled and drew a walk to load the bases, Tamara Statman hit the third Wildcat single of the inning to put Arizona ahead 2-0 in the first.

Crissey Amber Named WAC Track Athlete Of The Week

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State's Crissey Amberg was named this week's Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. This is Amberg's first honor of the season.

Amberg set a new school record at the Bryan Clay Invite this past weekend. She finished 38th of 274 runners with a personal best time of 4:25.37. Her time ranks first in the conference and 54th on the NCAA West qualifying list.

The Aggies travel to El Paso, Texas, for the UTEP Invitational on Saturday, April 22. Field events begin at 10 a.m. (MT) with the women's hammer throw. The women's 4x100m relay starts the running events at 2 p.m.

Moriah Mack Signs Training Camp Contract With WNBA's Minnesota Lynx

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - New Mexico State guard Moriah Mack signed a training camp contract with the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Tuesday. Moriah Mack is the second Aggie ever to sign a contract with a WNBA franchise. Anita Maxwell was the first Aggie to do so in 1997 when the Cleveland Rockers made her the 29th overall pick in the inaugural year of the WNBA draft.

During 2016-17, Mack’s senior season, the guard led the Aggies to a 24-7 record and a new program record of 17-consecutive wins. By season’s end Mack had helped NM State claim their third-straight Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title and the team’s third consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Chris Jans Named NMSU Men's Basketball Head Coach

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia handed the reigns to the coveted Aggie men's basketball program to Chris Jans Monday afternoon, naming the Fairbanks, Iowa, native the 26th head men's basketball coach at NM State.

The 25-year veteran takes the helm of an Aggie team that returns 4-of-5 starters and won a program record 28 games. The 2016-17 squad also owned the nation's third-longest winning-streak that lasted for 20-straight games.

He recently began his second-stint at Wichita State prior to the start of the 2016-17 season under head coach Greg Marshall. At the conclusion of this past season, Jans was elevated to associate head coach before taking the NM State head coaching job.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Alexis Maynez Named WAC Softball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State's Alexis Maynez was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is her first weekly honor this season and the first of her career at NM State.

Maynez, a sophomore catcher from Las Cruces, N.M., hit .833 with three extra-base hits and two RBI last week. Maynez recorded an exceptional 1.833 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base clip. She hit the game-ending home run in the fifth inning in the Aggies' 8-0 shutout of UMKC on Saturday. Maynez also hit a double and a triple in the second game of the doubleheader against the Roos. She entered the week batting .125 with a .313 slugging percentage and .263 on-base percentage; she now posts a .318 batting average, .333 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.

The Aggies take on No. 1 Arizona at home on Tuesday with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m. (MT).

NMSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Series With UMKC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State cruised past UMKC to complete the sweep of the Roos on Saturday. The Aggies run-ruled UMKC in both their 8-0 and 11-3 victories.

NMSU Baseball Defeats Sacramento State 5-2 To Win Series

SACRAMENTO, CA - The New Mexico State baseball team closed out a three-game series at Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon. The team held the opponent scoreless in eight innings and won the game 5-2. The victory took the series over the Hornets, 2-1.

How it happened
Saturday’s showdown pitted NM State (23-14, 8-1 WAC) starter Jonathan Groff against Sacramento State (17-18, 4-8 WAC) right-hander Max Karnos.

The Aggies got started early offensively when Brent Sakurai led off with a triple to right field and then scored on a sacrifice fly to put the team in front 1-0. Sacramento State threatened to tie the score in the top of the first with men on second and third, but Groff got the final batter to strike out swinging and preserve the Aggies lead.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Baseball Loses First WAC Game, Falls To Sacramento State In Extra Innings

SACRAMENTO, CA - Despite a nine-inning performance from Marcel Renteria, the New Mexico State baseball drop a thrilling 2-1 decision to Sacramento State Friday night in 12 innings.

How It Happened
After Renteria retired the first nine batters to start the game, Mason Fishback drew first blood for the Aggies when he hit a sac-fly to right field and gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered right back in their half of the frame when Sacramento State scored on a sac-fly of its own.

From there, it was a pitcher's duel between Renteria and Sacramento State's starting pitcher and pitching staff through nine innings of action.  Continue Reading This Post >>
