Aggie Soccer Defeats Fresno State 2-0

Lauren CopeThe Aggie soccer team won their fifth consecutive match on Friday night defeating conference foe Fresno State 2-0 in Fresno, Calif. Coach Needham was very proud of the way his kids played on Friday night saying afterwards, "We didn't play our best soccer but we definitely played with our best resolve and our best battle."

The Aggies took the lead early in the first half on a goal by Lauren Cope in the 14th minute off an assist by Crystal Burns. It was Cope's third goal of the season and third goal in as many matches. "We scored a great goal. Crystal Burns, who is turning into an assist machine, she's so dangerous that people have to deal with her and she just slipped the ball in between two players and Copey ran onto it and made a great first touch to cut the defender off and then she kind of lifted it over into the top corner off the inside of the post. It was just a great goal." For Burns it was her third assist on the season.

The Aggies took a 1-0 lead into halftime and then with time winding down in the second half the Aggies put the match away. Jazmin Cardoso sealed the match for the Aggies scoring on a penalty kick in the 86th minute.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Soccer Stuns Idaho 3-2

The Aggie women's soccer team stunned Idaho with three second half goals in a 12-minute span to steal a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. Goals by Jazmin Cardosa and Lauren Cope in the 51st and 60th minute tied things up before a goal by Yolanda McMillion in the 63rd minute gave the Aggies the lead for good.

Idaho got on the scoreboard early in the 1st half with goals by Chelsea Small and Jennifer Hull in the 18th and 21st minute giving the Vandals a 2-0 lead at halftime. Down 2-0 at the half head coach Michael Needham credited his assistant coach Stephanie Rigamat with helping him coach up the players at the break. "When you're down two goals you're kind of thinking man we're not really playing that well. Steph made a lot of good points with me as we were walking in the locker room and kind of calmed me down a little bit. She said, "'We're fine, our forwards are doing well, our midfielders playing well, everybody is playing real hard, we just made a couple mistakes and gave up a couple goals. We're going to win this game 3-2.'"

Katie GraulComing out in the second half the Aggies made some defensive adjustments but it was a save early in the second half by goal keeper Katie Graul that allowed the Aggies to stay in the match. After the match Coach Needham talked about that save. "The free kick in the beginning of the second half. That's a great save." My goal keeper coach and I, Chris Voddry talked about it. That's a save that doesn't look like it's that hard but because the ball is hit high and straight at you, there's a lot of decisions a goal keeper has to make and she decided to go with two hands and was able to tip it over the bar."

He also credited the team with not giving up even though they were down 2-0. "It's easy to give up when you're down 2-0," said Coach Needham. He added, "But at the same time 2-0 is probably the most dangerous score in a soccer game because soccer is a momentum game and it's a game where you never know what's going to happen. You're one bad bounce or one good bounce away from something good happening. We grinded it out and scored three good goals in the second half."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Soccer Comes From Behind To Win 2-1 Over Northwestern State

Courtney Irwin scored the game winning goal in the 81st minuteThe Aggie soccer team rallied in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State on Sunday morning. The Aggies and Lady Demons went into halftime tied 0-0. NSU's Sarah Sadler scored the match's first goal on a header off a corner kick in the 51st minute. The Aggies rebounded with a goal in the 68th minute on a penalty kick by Jazmin Cardosa and then Courtney Irwin scored her first goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead which would hold up. "They [NSU] went up 1-0, we did a good job of getting in the penalty box and getting a penalty kick," said Coach Needham. "Then Courtney Irwin scores the first goal of her career on a corner. The ball went in and then came back and and Court was able to get on the end of it and bang it into the net."

"It was a good match. It was actually a soccer game today and that suits us. We were able to play a little bit and get the ball on the ground. It was a very even game," said Coach Needham after the victory. The Aggies finish non-conference play at 5-5 and Coach Needham was pleased with being able to get to .500 heading into conference play. "I'm very happy to be able to get to .500 going into conference." Coach Needham's goal for the Aggies was to have them playing their best heading into conference play and Coach Needham feels like the Aggies have accomplished that goal. "The goal at the beginning of the year was if I could say today that this was the best soccer we played all year. I would say it was pretty darn close. We did a good job today."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 2-0 To West Texas A&M

The Aggie soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs on Monday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium. The Lady Buff's Lindsay McHorse scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season. "West Texas A&M is a good team. They're seasoned, they know how to win games. If you give teams like that chances they're going to take them," said head coach Michael Needham after the match.

Trailing 1-0 coming out of halftime the Aggies gave up a quick goal to fall behind 2-0. "It was a situation where we preach trying to play soccer and at times soccer isn't the right thing to do," said Coach Needham. "Our player's just got to run through a ball at midfield. If that happens they don't get into that end and have a throw in. Their [West Texas A&M's] kid on the second goal scored a great goal. She had a kid on her back, juggles the ball two times and then hits the ball blind from behind the defender that Katie [Graul] doesn't have a chance at."

With a young squad Coach Needham looked at the mistakes as a learning opportunity for his young team. "Everything we do as we go forward is a learning experience. If you look at the stats and everything in the game. It was a 0-0 game with two mistakes on our part." He added, "What I told our kids is as you go forward, every game is going to be that intense and every game is going to be that hard and you can't make those mistakes. It's college soccer and you can't make mistakes against good teams. If you make mistakes teams are going to punish you."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Soccer Shuts Out UT-Permian Basin 3-0

Behind a first half barrage that saw three different Aggies score goals, the New Mexico State women's soccer team shut out UT-Permian Basin on Wednesday night to improve to 3-4-0 on the season. "The kids played well. We played 21 players, scored three goals, didn't give up any, it was pretty positive night," said Coach Needham after the victory.

Veronica Subu scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute. For Subu it was her first goal of the season. Jazmin Cardosa fired a rocket from 35 yards out for her second goal of the season and the Aggies' second goal of the first half. "She hit it. Jaz and I talked before the game and I told her I wanted her to have at least five shots tonight and a goal," said Needham. "She definitely tried to fulfill her end of that. She can hit a ball. There's no question about that. We just need to get her to do that more."

Crystal Burns added the third goal in the 32nd minute of the match to give the Aggies a commanding 3-0 lead. For Burns it was her third goal of the season. "It was really an odd shot to get on goal but she actually bent it and I think the wind helped it a little bit," said Neehdam. "She did a really good job."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Women's Soccer Wins 3-2 In Overtime At Air Force

The Aggie women's soccer team used the momentum they gained from their first ever victory on Friday to earn another victory on Sunday afternoon. A quick goal by the Aggies' Crystal Burns just under 10 minutes into the game gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead. "It was really good, we knocked it around and kept the ball and we got a ball for Crystal [Burns], it was a lot like the goal she scored at home, it was actually a little better," said Needham. "She got the ball, did a nice little scissor and step over move and went past the defender and just hammered it on her right foot from about 30 yards. That gave us the lift and we really got going from there. I think it also woke the other team up." The Aggies used that lift to score another goal on a free kick. This time it was Nina Yanes doing the scoring as she netted her second goal of the weekend this one coming in the 51st minute to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead. "We played a free kick in the box and the ball started knocking around and Nina [Yanes] scored her second goal [of the weekend]."  Continue Reading This Post >>
