NMSU Women's Soccer Falls 3-2 At UTRGV

EDINBURG, TX - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team was dealt a 3-2 loss by UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday evening. The Aggies finish off the regular-season with an overall record of 9-9-2 and head into the Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the fifth seed with a 3-3-1 record.

NM State paced itself offensively in the first half, taking five shots with two of them being on goal. In the 17th minute of action, Aileen Galicia made a cross to Jody Hernandez and put the ball into the net, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead. UTRGV (9-7-3, 4-2-1) came back with the equalizer at 18:25 when Gina Steiner shot the ball around Aggie goalkeeper Dmitri Fong. The Aggies headed into halftime leading UTRGV, 2-1, after Devin Hart passed the ball to Galicia and took the long shot to score in the 32nd minute.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Soccer Falls To UMKC 1-0

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's soccer team battled hard, but fell shy of the win as it was dealt a 1-0 loss by UMKC on Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Athletic Complex.

It was a battle of the offenses as New Mexico State (9-8-2, 3-2-1) was outshot by UMKC (11-6-1, 6-0-0) 14-6 in the first half of the match. At 33:26, the Aggies trailed the Roos, 1-0, when UMKC's Hayden Burnett made a corner kick and Lexi Howard capitalized with a header to get the ball around NM State's goalkeeper Dmitri Fong. In the 44th minute of action, Kelly Burton had a shot-on-goal, but the ball hit the crossbar. NMSU Soccer Notches First Ever Win Over Seattle

SEATTLE, WA - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team defeated Seattle U, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon for the first time in program history. The Aggies are now 2-1-1 in Western Athletic Conference play and 8-7-2 overall.

The NM State defense was tested early in the first half of the match as Seattle U (5-8-2, 1-2-1 WAC) fired off 10 shots, five of them on goal. The Aggies were finally able to break through in the 17th minute when Aileen Galicia passed the ball to Audriana Chavez and found the back of the net, giving NM State the 1-0 lead. Seattle U continued its attack on the Aggie defense and capitalized at 29:48 when Isabelle Butterfield shot the ball around goalkeeper Dmitri Fong and scored the equalizer. NMSU Soccer Loses 2-1 At SMU

DALLAS, TX - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team fell shy of the win after being dealt a 2-1 loss by SMU Friday afternoon. The Aggies fall to 5-6-1 on the season with one match remaining in the non-conference season.

NM State struggled for part of the first half after being outshot by SMU, 22-1. At 8:49, goalkeeper Dmitri Fong made a great save against SMU’s Lauren Harrington, but Blaire Thorpe took a shot at the goal immediately after and got the ball around Fong, setting the Aggies behind 1-0. At the 25th minute of play, forward Devin Hart made a move to steal the ball and quickly passed it to Audriana Chavez, who scored the equalizing goal against SMU goalkeeper Catie Brown. NMSU Soccer Falls At Northern Colorado

GREELEY, CO - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team was no match for the Northern Colorado Bears as the team fell, 4-1, Sunday afternoon for its second loss.

NM State played well defensively in the first half, but trailed 1-0 after Northern Colorado’s Brooke Braden got the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Martin. Aggie midfielders Aileen Galicia, Jody Hernandez and Rebecca Mazzie along with defender Samantha Afonso all attempted shots at the goal, but came up short. NMSU Soccer Defeats Rio Grande Rival UNM 1-0 With Last Minute Goal

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - It was an incredible finish for the New Mexico State women’s soccer team as they defeated their in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, Thursday evening for the first time in program history. This is also the first time NM State has swept both rivals.

“This game, you don’t need to talk to your players about motivation,” Delgado said about Fong and the team’s motivation. “It’s already there. It was there yesterday in training and it was there when I saw some of the girls on campus today. It was there when they walked into the locker room. The motivation is there. Some of our players had some extra motivation, like Dmitri. She was a transfer from UNM, so she had something to prove. We had a couple of our other girls on our team that have ties with some of the other players, so there’s something to prove.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Soccer Earns Draw Against Northern Illinois

DEKALB, IL - The New Mexico State women’s soccer team came face-to-face with its second consecutive double-overtime match, ultimately ending in a 0-0 draw against Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon.

Goalkeeper Dmitri Fong played the entire 110 minutes without allowing NIU to score. Midfielder Aileen Galicia had four shot attempts along with teammate Audriana Chavez, who had three shot attempts of her own, keeping the Aggies’ state of mind in attack mode.

Despite being outshot 24-14, the Aggies stood their ground and remained focused through the entire match against the Huskies. This gave head coach Freddy Delgado and the team something to build on as the season continues.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Soccer Notches 2-1 Victory Over I-10 Rival UTEP In Double Overtime

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Forward Audriana Chavez came through in the clutch for the New Mexico State women’s soccer team with the game-winning goal, 2-1, in double overtime Friday night on their home field over Battle of I-10 rival UTEP.

In front of a sell-out crowd, Chavez made a huge play for the Aggies which led them to claim their first victory in the Battle of I-10. It was the first win for any head coach in NM State women’s soccer history.

The first period of the match showcased the defensive talents of both the Aggies and Miners. With UTEP claiming the first goal at the 30:20 mark, the Aggies went into halftime optimistic. NMSU Soccer Falls To Utah Valley 2-0 In WAC Tournament First Round

KANSAS CITY, MO - The NM State women’s soccer team saw its season come to a close Thursday afternoon at the Durwood Soccer Stadium as it fell to Utah Valley 2-0.

Possessing the ball was once again the crux for NM State as it got outshot by UVU 21-6 and held without a shot on goal the entire game.

Possession was very back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the first half between NM State and Utah Valley. Then, in the 12th minute of the game, the Aggies had trouble clearing the ball inside the box that UVU’s Libby Weber took advantage of and sent into the back of the net.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Soccer Defeats UTRGV 1-0 On Late Goal By Galicia

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior Day at the Soccer Athletic Complex in Las Cruces, N.M. featured strong defensive play from both teams as NM State recorded the game’s only goal with 6:11 remaining in the contest, as they shutout UT-Rio Grande Valley 1-0.

The Aggies (5-12-2) faced seven shots on goal and goaltender Ashley Martin stood tall and saved them all. Along with the stellar play by Martin, the NM State defense blocked three shots and safely defended two corner kicks, the only ones of the game.

From the start, NM State and UTRGV looked to end the season on a high note with aggressive play. However, this play resulted in nine fouls combined for the two teams as they headed in to the locker rooms at halftime. Coupled with the aggressive play, the first 45 minutes of action highlighted great defense by both squads as each team fired four shots, to no avail, as the half ended in a 0-0 tie.  Continue Reading This Post >>
