Aggies Lose 63-16 At No. 18 Georgia

ATHENS, GA. - The New Mexico State football team stepped out of conference Saturday afternoon and fell to No. 18 Georgia 63-16 at the Bulldogs’ Sanford Stadium.

Junior running back Kenny Turner led the Aggie offense on the day, scoring two touchdowns and set career receiving numbers. Turner led the NM State receiving corps as well with a career-high 127 yards on eight receptions, also a career mark. He rushed for 94 yards on the ground on 23 carries. It marked Turner’s second career game with a receiving and rushing touchdown in addition to his game at San Jose State earlier this season.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 48-34 To Nevada

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team had career nights from three Aggies on senior night but fell to Nevada, 48-34.

Senior quarterback Matt Christian threw for a career-high 432 yards and three touchdowns. It was his first 400-yard passing game of his career. Senior wide receiver Taveon Rogers was one of Christian's favorite targets and grabbed a career-high 203 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Rogers leads NM State with eight touchdown receptions this season.

Senior safety Donyae Coleman led the Aggie defensive with a career-high 24 tackles and a forced fumble. NM State moved to 3-5 and 1-3 in the WAC, while the Wolf Pack is now 5-3 and 3-0.

On the opening drive of the game, the Aggies marched down the field in 12-plays and 78-yards to take a 6-0 lead. Christian capped the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Rogers. The Aggies missed the extra point.

Near the end of the first quarter, Nevada scored to take its first lead of the game, 7-6, when sophomore running back Stephfon Jefferson skirted the sideline for a 26-yard touchdown.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 45-34 At Hawai'i

HONOLULU, HI - The New Mexico State football team dropped its second game of the conference season at Hawai'I 45-34 at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.

The Aggies drop to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Hawai'i improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the WAC with the win.

The Aggies were led by junior running back Kenny Turner with 119 yards on the ground on 17 carries including a 46-yard touchdown run. It marked the fourth straight game that Turner eclipsed 100 rushing yards this season. Turner also led the Aggies in catches with seven for 61 yards.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Hold On For 31-24 Victory Over Idaho

The New Mexico State football game won their third game of the season and first WAC contest of the season with a 31-24 victory over Idaho on Saturday night. The Aggies overcame two special teams touchdowns by Idaho while Taveon Rogers broke New Mexico State's career kickoff return yardage record as he tallied 172 yards on four returns including a 100-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

The Aggies held the Vandals to just 281 total yards and gained 393 yards behind 171 rushing yards from Kenny Turner and 202 passing yards from Matt Christian and true freshman Travaughn Colwell who replaced the injured Christian in the second half.

The Aggies would jump on the board first as they would put together a 69 yard touchdown drive on seven plays. The quick strike took just 2:29 off the clock giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Idaho's Justin Veltung would fumble and Donyae Coleman would recover the ball at the Vandals' 27-yard line and return it to the 20 yard line. The Aggies would take advantage and on the first play from scrimmage Matt Christian would hook up with Kemonte Bateman on a 20-yard touchdown strike. The extra point would give the Aggies a 14-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the game.

On the Vandals' ensuing drive the Aggies would force a three-and-out and an Idaho punt, however, Austin Franklin would muff the punt and Idaho would recover on the Aggies' six yard line. The Vandals would punch the ball in three plays later to cut the Aggies' lead to seven at 14-7.

Idaho would kick off and Taveon Rogers would field the ball in the end zone and return it 100 yards for a touchdown restoring the Aggies' lead to two touchdowns.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Matt Christian Has Career Day As Aggies Roll To 42-28 Victory Over Rival New Mexico

Aggie quarterback Matt Christian turned in a virtuoso performance on Saturday night, setting career-highs in passing yards with 296 and touchdowns throws with four. He also added a career-high 101 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown as the Aggies rolled over in-state rival New Mexico 42-28 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score. New Mexico State won the coin toss and elected to receive and started the game off with a bang as Austin Franklin returned the ball 54 yards to the UNM 46 yard line. The Lobos were flagged for a personal foul adding 15 yards to the return setting the Aggies up at UNM's 31 yard line. Two plays later Matt Christian found Todd Lee wide open on the right side of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown strike. The extra point gave the Aggies a 7-0 lead.

The Lobos would move the ball from their own 26 yard line down to the Aggies' 44 yard line before the defense would force a punt. The Aggies would take over from their 10 yard line and drive the length of the field as Matt Christian found Austin Franklin for a 50-yard touchdown strike to put the Aggies up 14-0.

New Mexico State would force a three and out from the Lobo offense and after taking over on their own 20 yard line, Matt Christian would again lead the Aggies on a touchdown drive as he would find Kemonte Bateman for a 25 yard touchdown pass on 3rd and 4. The extra point put the Aggies up 21-0 marking the Aggies' largest lead of the season over a team and the first time they had scored 21 or more points on offense since the second quarter against Alcorn State in 2006.

The teams would trade punts to start the second quarter and New Mexico would mount a drive starting at their own 15 yard line. UNM would convert on a pair of third downs on the drive and would finally get on the board as Crusoe Gonbay would score from eight yards out on a touchdown run to cut the Aggies' lead to 21-7 after the extra point.

New Mexico State would take over with 8:17 left in the half and from their own 28 the Aggies would put together a 12 play drive culminating in a 1-yard Matt Christian sneak for a touchdown to put the Aggies up 28-7.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 34-24 At San Jose State In WAC Opener

SAN JOSE, CA - The New Mexico State football team dropped its opening Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game of the season 34-24 at San Jose State Saturday afternoon.

NM State dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. San Jose State earned its first win of the year to improve to 1-3 overall and begin WAC play at 1-0. The Aggies were flagged for eight fouls for 76 yards while the Spartans drew one penalty for five markers on the day.

Aggie senior quarterback Matt Christian made his first start of the season, throwing for 238 yards on 17-of-28 passing with an interception and a touchdown. Christian also rushed for a 9-yard touchdown as part of his 58 yards rushing on 13 carries.  Continue Reading This Post >>
