NMSU Women's Basketball Falls At UC Riverside 65-64

RIVERSIDE, CA - The New Mexico State women's basketball team dropped a tough 65-64 decision on the road against UC Riverside on Friday night in the first game of its California road trip.

The Aggies got off to an excellent start with Brooke Salas scoring five early points for a 5-2 NM State lead with two minutes gone in the first. Although, the two sides then went back and forth with New Mexico State leading the Highlanders 12-10 at the media timeout with 4:10 left in the first. From there, the Aggies dominated the rest of the quarter, closing on a 13-4 run, including a buzzer-beating layup from Aaliyah Prince to take a 25-14 lead into the second. Brooke Salas Records Triple Double As Aggies Defeat Alcorn State 82-64

MIAMI, FL - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team got a triple-double from Brooke Salas as it rode a dominant second half to an 82-64 victory over Alcorn State in the consolation game of the FIU Holiday Tournament from the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Friday afternoon.

The Aggies (7-4) raced out to an early 6-2 lead but Alcorn State (1-10) fought back and made it a one point game at 11-10 with 2:25 in the quarter. However, NM State responded with two free throws from freshman Tayelin Grays and a lay-in from Brooke Salas to take a 15-12 lead into the second quarter. NMSU Women's Basketball Falls To New Mexico 75-50

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s basketball dropped a 75-50 decision in the Battle of I-25 on Saturday afternoon in the Pan American Center.

After New Mexico notched the game’s opening bucket, NM State went on a 9-0 run including back-to-back threes from Monique Mill and Brooke Salas to take a 9-2 lead with 7:24 in the first. The Aggies then got buckets from Baylee Robinson, Dominique Mills and Rodrea Echols to take a 15-10 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter started with an 8-2 Lobo run that saw them take an 18-17 lead heading into the media timeout. Then, NM State got back in the lead at 22-18 after five straight points from Brooke Salas. However, New Mexico closed the half on a 12-5 run for a 31-27 halftime lead. Salas led all scorers at the half with 14 points and added seven boards. The Aggie defense held UNM to just 30.2 percent (13-43) shooting from the floor in the half.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Women's Basketball Falls At UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team dropped an 83-58 decision at New Mexico in the Battle of I-25 on Saturday afternoon.

NM State (4-2) got on the board first with a layup from Adenike Aderinto and led 7-4 with 7:25 to go in the first thanks to another Aderinto lay-in and a three from Gia Pack. However, the Lobos (5-1) got hot from three and closed out the quarter on a 24-5 run to take a 28-12 at the end of the period. New Mexico finished the first quarter 5-12 from three.

The Aggies defended the three much better in second quarter, allowing just one three on seven attempts, but UNM began attacking the rim effectively, including 13 second quarter points from Aisia Robertson. NMSU Women's Basketball Takes Round One In Battle Of I-10

EL PASO, TX - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team raced out to an early lead against UTEP before making clutch shots down the stretch to win its second-straight Battle of I-10 in El Paso, 69-65, on Saturday afternoon. NM State won last year’s meeting 76-68, also in the Sun City.

Although UTEP would get the scoring going with a three at seventh minute mark of the first quarter, the quarter was all Aggies from there. NM State got a three from Brooke Salas to get on the scoreboard before scoring 12 straight points to take a 15-3 lead with 1:56 to go . UTEP then scored two free throws before Salas capped an 18-3 run with a three with 1:15 until the end of the first.

The Miners nailed a three with 17 seconds to play in the period for an 18-8 NM State lead at the intermission. The Aggie defense held UTEP to just 2-13 shooting in the quarter while shooting 50% (7-14).  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Women's Basketball Opens Season With 70-38 Win Over UT Permian Basin

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's basketball team cruised to a 70-38 victory over UT Permian Basin behind an outstanding defensive performance in Tuesday night's season-opener.

"I thought we really brought it on the defensive end tonight," said head coach Brooke Atkinson. "I liked our energy on that end of the floor. I thought we did really good job challenging them on that end of the floor. NMSU Women's Basketball Defeats UTRGV, Claims Fourth Straight WAC Regular Season Title

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team hosted UT Rio Grande Valley at the Pan American Center for Senior Night in the regular season finale on Saturday. After outscoring the Vaqueros 48-31 in the second half, the Aggies earned a 72-56 victory that won the team a record fourth straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season title.

Following the monumental win head coach Brooke Atkinson said, “Coach Trakh and his staff did a great job putting quality pieces into this program that began a championship tradition. NMSU Women's Basketball Downs UMKC

KANSAS CITY, MO - The New Mexico State women's basketball team played its final road game of the regular season against UMKC at the Swinney Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies had a flurry of scoring which featured five players finishing with double-digits to lead NM State to a 76-67 victory.

In a game full of lead changes, NM State (16-11, 10-3 WAC) looked to strong play in the paint where they outscored UMKC (10-18, 6-7 WAC) 34-14 and added seven blocks compared to zero for the Roos to spur the team to victory.

The game opened with Kansas City winning the opening tip and putting NM State in a quick 5-1 hole. The first lead change of the game came just 50 seconds later when a 6-0 run gave the Aggies a 7-5 edge.

A closely contested remainder of the first quarter saw the teams trade baskets with NM State leading by just one, 14-13, through 10 minutes of action.  Continue Reading This Post >>
